Farmer John Matthews Won Jacksonville's 1964 Leatherneck 150 as Car Owner Burned During Refueling

Stock Car Racing History

William, I remember those days at Carolina Beach, too. The first time I ever saw Farmer John was at Myrtle Beach in about '63 or '64...he and Glenn Simpkins was there the same night...the race was rained out. At that time, the 16 jr. was bronze/copper colored. But later, at Carolina Beach it was blue metallic. Looked to be the same car, '37 chevy coupe, and the lettering, on both versions, was yellow....car had the first "Jahn's Pistons" decal I ever saw.

Daytona Re-Development Program looks awesome

Current NASCAR

Wally, thanks for bringing up Volusia county. I have this vision: next year, in conjunction with the beach parade (it's already scheduled for Feb. 15th) what if Volusia county hosted a vintage race? They are already racing nightly during speedweeks, and the vintage parade/race could become an annual part of the festivities.

I'd rather have a 3/8 mile dirt track

Did Any One Notice Kyle Busch's In-Car Camera??? EDIT: Picture Added!

Stock Car Racing History

Cody, I've noticed the curved dash too, and it seems peculiar to the JGR cars. (Hamlin's car has one too) Most race cars have flat dashboards, as they're much easier to fabricate. Don't think there's an advantage one way or the other.

It Wasn't Always Fun

Stock Car Racing History

Having grown up with a small-plane, private pilot the most dangerous aspect of this type of flight, (IMO) is not necessarily the plane itself, but the pilot's super-confidence in the entire subject. Apparently it's a consequence of the subject.

Dave, I know all about those racing and flying stories ....my dad was flying his plane home from the 1976American 500at Rockingham. The plane developed engine problems and crashed in Columbus county, NC...maybe 15 minutes from home. One passenger survived, but dad and another passenger were DOA. It was October 24 1976, and Richard Petty won, I had also attended the race, but fortunately (for me) had driven my car. I had made the flight w/dad many times as it was only about a 45 minute trip from Shallotte.

A STEP BACK IN TIME WITH --SOUTHERN NITES--

Stock Car Racing History

After a year or two, we graduated from imaginary race cars with cinder-block wheels to real ones........fabricated with 2 X 4's and roofing tin, and powered by the neighborhood kids pushing like crazy. Mine was the coupe.

Johnny, me and my two cousins would make "modifieds" out in their back yard. The most important part was imagination, as the "cars" were usually made from four cinder blocks (one for each wheel) with scrap lumber for the frame, a paste-board box was the hood/engine and each cars roll bars were fashioned from scraps of 12-2 electrical wire..(my uncle was an electrician and had lots of scrap wire lying around and we were racing in his back yard.........) Our modifieds never moved an inch, those cinder blocks never rolled to good.....but we'd "race" in them for hours..........I was always Earl Moss, racing a chevy coupe at RAMBI Raceway! Back in the day, imagination was in great supply, and wasn't it fun! Good times!
