"Thumbs up" to NASCAR from The Legend

General

After Homestead, you can resume shopping at Home Depot as their time in NASCAR will be done. Though after this mishap, perhaps your home improvement and lawn care days are coming to an end. Ha.

ROUSH FENWAY RACING DROPS A BOMB

Current NASCAR

Carl and Jimmy Fennig are pros. They'll still give it their all to win the title just as Harvick tried last year with RCR. Based on the way the 99 has raced lately though, it's doubtful Edwards will advance to Homestead - with or without this announcement.

But Roush is clearly a bitter old man in my opinion. His announcement was provided to the press specifically to make things awkward for Carl - just as he did with Kenseth a couple of years ago. I'm really not surprised at all by the news nor in the fashion it was announced.

Roush has had a lot of success in NASCAR the last 25 years. But departures over the last decade of Martin, Burton, Kenseth and now Edwards say a lot about the trending of the team. Look who has left - and look who has been hired to replace them. It's not a good story to tell, and it's one reason among others I wish Richard Petty Motorsports could find another supplier partner.

How Long Did PDA Last? It Was Involved in 1972 Richard Petty Night in Greensboro

Stock Car Racing History

RP was still sporting the PDA patch in 1971 at Riverside.

And still had it at the October 1971 Rockingham race.

What is the first Nascar race you attended

Stock Car Racing History

1st NASCAR race? That would be sometime in 1974 - can't remember exact date or race. But it was at Nashville Fairgrounds, and I think it was one of the many NASCAR-sanctioned 200 lap features the track had for the touring Late Model Sportsman division. My uncle stopped by our house and took my dad and me. Pretty sure another uncle and my cousin went as well.

My first NASCAR Winston Cup race was the Music City USA 420 at Nashville on June 3, 1978. Cale led every dadgum lap - but I did get to meet a teenage Petty Enterprises crewman, Kyle Petty AND get my picture made by the famed 43.

Help needed identifying 1971 championship watch

Stock Car Racing History

Word from Chris Hussey is the watch may have belonged to a PE parts guy by the name of Lou Penkava. Was friends with another former Petty Enterprises employee Warren Prout. Lou's son Larry is the editor for the Randolph Guide, and his email is:

lpenkava@randolphguide.com

Might be worth checking with Larry.

Hope that helps.

Marty Robbins in #4 Dodge Dart racing with what the caption says is Arnet Awtry in a #72 Plymouth Barracuda vs. a Camaro as noted above. Not sure which is correct.
