Mario Rossi 69 Charger 500 Photos

Stock Car Racing History

Found this one at Legends of NASCAR if it will help.

Also, you might contact Don Smyle at Smyle Media to see if he has one. I bought an ebook he put together of Don Hunter photos from 1969 Speedweeks.

I don't recall seeing a pic with that logo on it in the book. But Don may have additional ones of the car in his collection to share.

On This Day June 10, 1979 Riverside International Raceway

Stock Car Racing History

As Scott referenced, rookie Dale Earnhardt was the surprising pole winner in only his 2nd race at Riverside. - Spartanburg Herald Journal

As mentioned in my post about about the June 9, 1974 race at Riverside , NASCAR often co-sanctioned the Riverside race as a Winston Cup and Winston West event - mainly to cobble together enough cars for a full field. Plus, the economics of racing in 1979 was pretty tough on many teams. The situation was noticed by an AP writer. - Daytona Beach Morning Journal

Jimmy Insolo's 2nd place qualifying run didn't mean much in the race as he fell out early. But his early exit was a boon for King Richard who needed relief help during the race. Insolo took over the 43 and soldiered it home to a 3rd place finish behind Waltrip. When the dust settled at Ontario 5 months later, Petty won his 7th title over Waltrip by 11 points. Looking back, one could argue it was Jimmy Insolo who secured the championship for Petty with his marvelous run.

On This Day June 9, 1974 - Riverside International Raceway

Stock Car Racing History

On June 9, 1974, NASCAR's Winston Cup and Winston West series ran a combination race in the Turborg 400 at Riverside. The practice was common during the 1970s and 1980s as it helped make sure NASCAR could go green with a full field. Many Cup regulars often declined to make the trip out west because of the high costs vs. low purses.

The race was still scheduled for 400 MILES. Later, Riverside's races were measured by kilometers vs. miles. Consistent with many other races in the 1974 season, the length was trimmed by 10 percent as recognition of the nation's energy crisis. As a result the Tuborg 400 was actually a 360-mile, 138-lap event. - Motor Racing Programme Covers

As the 1974 season began, George Follmer was behind the wheel of Bud Moore's #15 Ford with sponsorship from RC Cola - a deal Follmer supposedly brought to the table. The duo raced in 11 of the season's first 12 events. Then right before the World 600, it was announced Buddy Baker would race Moore's Ford as Follmer took care of some business back in California. The original story was that Baker's deal was only for the one race. - Spartanburg Herald

Interestingly but awkwardly, Stock Car Racing magazine featured RC Cola's entry into Cup with Follmer on the cover ... of its JUNE 1974 issued. Yep, right around the time George parted ways with Bud's team.

Despite the original statement, Baker continued with Moore. Follmer was suddenly on the outside looking in. After missing the 600, he returned to Cup competition 2 weeks and 1 race later at Riverside. No longer with Moore, Follmer signed on for a single race with Roger Penske's unsponsored Matador team.

Follmer got off to a new start with his new situation by nipping Bobby Allison for the pole. Cale Yarborough and King Richard made up the second row, and the reigning Winston Cup champion Benny Parsons rounded out the top 5 starters. Noticeably absent from the field of starters was David Pearson and the Wood Brothers team.

The weekend's activities started, however, with some drama for Penske's team. As the crew squirted some gas in the carburetor, it ignited. Though the fire was quickly extinguished, wiring in the car had to be replaced in time for Follmer to attempt his qualifying run. Perhaps that is one reason among others that over the past 40 years teams have been seen squirting ether into cars vs. gasoline. - Spartanburg Herald

At the drop of the green, Follmer leveraged his top starting spot to lead lap 1. Unfortunately for him, however, his great qualifying run was otherwise of little benefit. The engine in the Penske Matador gave up after only 7 laps, and Follmer finished 33rd in the 35-car field. He did not race again in 1974 until the season ending event at Ontario, and he raced only 6 more times at the Cup level - twice in 1975, 1986 and 1987.

Hershel McGriff must have a wide range of emotions that day. He dominated the preliminary 100 mile sportsman race by leading all but 5 laps en route to his win. But in the Cup race, he lasted only one lap and finished dead last.

The race was largely a battle of 2 NASCAR Hall of Famers - both of whom raced for Junior Johnson, one in the past and the other at the time. Allison who had raced for Junior in 1972 was driving a Coca-Cola Chevy for himself. Yarborough was in his second season with Junior after returning from the USAC Indy Car world.

As Follmer disappeared early, Allison went to the point for the next 25 laps. Yarborough and Petty were right there with him. The 43 Dodge sneaked in there and led a lap, but he surrendered the lead one lap later to Cale.

Cale then paced the field around the serpentine track for the next 82 laps before giving the lead back to Allison. Along the way, the engine in Petty's STP Dodge gave way and he was done around lap 50.

As the race wore on, the heat intensified - with the competition between Allison and Cale and the temps themselves. With California temperatures well into the 90s, the 2 leading drivers were really being drained. Yet Allison kept his foot in it, and he built a sizable lead on Cale.

With only a few laps to go, however, Allison gave up his big lead and ducked onto pit road to get what he believed were a extra gallons he needed to make it to the end of the race.

During his pit stop, Cale caught up and took the lead. Allison was then faced with making the charge to retake the lead from Cale - perhaps even forcing him out of gas. Running on fumes himself, Yarborough had to put his Kar Kare Chevy on cruise control to manage his lead - even as Allison was in hot pursuit. But Cale had enough of a lead - and enough fuel - to make it to the finish line and claim his first road course victory. And this was the likely the closest view Bobby could get of Cale as the checkers fell.

After being given a bit of oxygen after an exhausting day, Cale recovered enough to hoist the trophy and get his victory kiss.

On This Day June 8, 1980 Riverside International Raceway

Stock Car Racing History

Qualifying was held on D-Day, June 6th. As Scott referenced, Cale Yarborough nabbed the pole - his 5th consecutive one of the 1980 season. - Gadsden Times

In a situation rarely seen anymore, Riverside had a double header on June 8th. The Cup 400 race was accompanied by the Sharon 200 Grand American race. Joe Ruttman won the pole on Saturday June 7th, and Ron Esau won the race. I'm not sure which race was run 1st. I suspect the Cup race ran 1st followed by the GA race because I can find nothing on Esau's win. I'm presuming the media was focused on filing stories for the Cup race vs. keeping up with the the progress of Esau's run. - Spartanburg Herald Journal

On This Day June 8, 1975 - Riverside International Raceway

Stock Car Racing History

To keep the continuity going for the string of June GN/Cup races at Riverside, here is a post for the 1975 Turborg 400. I originally blogged about in it 2012 here:

http://bench-racing.blogspot.com/2012/06/june-8-this-day-in-petty-history-part-3.html

Richard Petty leads 60 of 153 laps and wins the Tuborg 400 at Riverside International Raceway to earn his 171st career NASCAR Winston Cup victory.

Petty started second alongside long-time rival Bobby Allison. The majority of the 153 laps on the southern California road course were led between the two drivers - 75 by Allison and 60 by Petty.

Interestingly, two drivers and teams who historically raced well at Riverside - Cale Yarborough with Junior Johnson's Chevy team and David Pearson with the Wood Brothers Mercury team - did not enter the race. Economic times for race teams was tough in 1975 - low race purses, high operating costs, limited sponsorship dollars. Riverside wasn't the only race where some of the more well-established teams chose not to enter in 1975.

Yet Cale was among the drivers included in the promo pictures for the race.

June 7, 1959: Tiger Tom has a racy ragtop

Stock Car Racing History

Sandwiched between spring and fall 500-lap Grand National races at Martinsville was the 500-lap Old Dominion 500 for NASCAR's short-lived convertible series. Glen Wood took the pole during qualifying on D-Day, June 6th.

Youngster Richard Petty qualified 2nd at the track he'd come to master many times over the next 20 years. Jimmy Massey timed 3rd in a second Wood Brothers car - one spot behind Petty. Massey likely had a bit of frustration or resignation a year later when he finished one spot behind Petty again - this time in the [ 1960 Virginia 500 ], Richard's 2nd win.

Lee Petty, Bob Welborn and Fireball Roberts arrived too late to qualify but were allowed to start shotgun on the field. Petty and Welborn had raced in the GN race in Spartanburg on Friday night, June 5th. They probably just couldn't make it to Martinsville by the time qualifying began on Saturday. I'm not certain why Fireball was late as he isn't shown in the finishing order for the Spartanburg race. - Spartanburg Herald

The first half or so of the race was competitive with the lead swapping between Wood, Rex White, Welborn, Bobby Johns and Lee Petty. But one by one, the various leaders had issues of one kind or another. Around the 300 lap mark, Tiger Tom Pistone headed to the point in his independent Ford Thunderbird. He was unchallenged the rest of the way as he won by 6 laps over Larry Frank, Joe Lee Johnson, Roy Tyner, and Bobby Johns. The two Petty cars driven by Lee and Richard finished 6th and 7th, respectively.- Spartanburg Herald
