Daytona 500 - 1967

Stock Car Racing History

Actually, before the 67 500 the last time Tiny drove for PE was in 1957. He did run a few times for Julian Petty in 58 - but not with Lee's team. I've heard multiple versions of the "Tiny whuppin" story (all of them funny). But as I understand it, the whole deal started with Lee overhearing Tiny badmouth him a bit after they parted company in 1957. Some versions have 'em scrapping right there - other versions have them wrasslin at the payout window following the race. Who knows - I guess the best racing stories don't need but a shred of truth to still be funny and memorable. Either way, looks like it took 10 years for the Pettys and Tiny to reconnect.

About that 1st World 600, I believe you are thinking about Bobby Johns who drove the 3rd Petty Plymouth, #46 - and the only one of the 3 cars that wasn't DQ'd when the race was done.

Diana Batts - Miss USA in 1965-66

Became Dian Parkinson and a regular with Bob Barker on The Price Is Right for many years. Later posed for a certain magazine wearing less than her former Miss USA crown.

Didn't know. Had to search around a bit. Great trivia.

Petty Enterprises' hiring of Tiny Lund was just a couple of weeks before Speedweeks began. While I realize it was a different era without press kits, corporate sponsors, merchandising orders, etc., I still think its interesting that the hiring was so late. I now wonder if other drivers were considered - and perhaps rejected by PE or declined by the driver - before settling on Tiny. From DBMJ .

A feel good story of Speedweeks was Ralph Latham's unexpected, surprise win in the ARCA 250.From DBMJ .

Interesting to hear the radio broadcast of the race as Tim might have heard it had he got bought a ticket from the witch? The 1967 500 is available for streaming at motorracingnetwork.com - or you can download it through iTunes. Really interesting to hear young Barney Hall as a turn announcer vs. in the booth.

Good stuff Tim. I never watched races - or any event actually - on those closed-circuit TV deals in theatres or auditoriums though I've seen and remember many promotions. I've never even bought a pay-per-view event on cable! But in the absence of being there and having some walking around money, I certainly see how that would be a fun and novel way to watch the race vs. just listening to it on radio.

I remember a heavy promotion at Nashville Speedway and I'm sure a TON of other places around the country in 73-74 time frame to pay for the closed circuit viewing of Evel Knievel's attempted jump over the Snake River Canyon. Was going to be shown at Municipal Auditorium in Nashville. Being a kid, I thought that would be an incredible experience. My wise and spend-thrift parents looked at me, snickered and said "WHAT? Are you nuts? No way we're going to that - much less pay for it." Looking back, the 'jump' was a disaster - but I wonder if the box office gate was equally as bad. Anyway, back to 67 Speedweeks...

RacersReunion members have shared some really good pics from that year - too many to embed here in a reply. Just search for "1967 daytona" - and remember friends and neighbors to always tag and title your photos!

After making his GN debut at Nashville in July 1966, Coo Coo Marlin made his 2nd and 3rd starts in his Daytona debut in the 1967 qualifier and 500. Fortunately, he made the field for the 500. Unfortunately, he finished dead last in the 50-car field. - Craig Bontrager

This Day in History - February 11th, 1994

Stock Car Racing History

First time I got to see Cup cars live was in July 1976 at Nashville's fairgrounds speedway. We were there for Cup qualifying for the Nashville 420 and some local late model features to fill out the night.

The first half of Bobby Allison's 1976 season had a really rough start to it. In the 2nd race of the season, he flipped and absolutely destroyed his Roger Penske CAM2 Mercury at Rockingham. But he returned to race another day. Then several days before Nashville, he was injured in a much more serious accident in a modified, late model even in Elko, Minnesota.

He called upon his friend and fellow Alabama Gang member for an assist in qualifying at Nashville. Bonnett suited up in the Mercury and put Bobby's car on the pole. Allison managed to run the race and got credit for the start and the points. I'm not even sure if Neil was officially credited with the pole or not.

About those Cokes Tim, I heard a phrase last week from Texas songwriter Ray Wylie Hubbard that may be a good descriptor. He was talking about beer floating in a cooler of air-temperature water- but I imagine same situation applies to Co-Colas. He said they were "rodeo cold". Ha.

Curtis Turner not only made his return to Daytona in the GN, but he also entered - and won - the Saturday Permatex 300 sportsman race.

The race was also the Daytona debut of an upstart driver from Owensboro, KY. DW finished 18th driving a car number he'd later sport again when he joined forces with the DiGard GN team in the mid 70s.
