Racing History Minute - 1963 Daytona 500

Stock Car Racing History

A few more pics...

I've shared a lot of old articles and photos from archived editions of the Daytona Beach Morning Journal in this series of racing history minute posts. Here is one of their photographers at work.

How great is this foursome - the Golden Boy, Fireball, Little Joe and Darel Dieringer.

Ralph Earnhardt in car #73 - a number best remembered as being associated with Johnny Beauchamp in 59 and 61.

The Timmonsville Flash - Cale finished 20th in the 2nd qualifying race, but it wasn't good enough to transfer him to the 500.

Bob Cooper - finished 39th

Red Foote - finished 29th. The Daytona twin and 500 were the 5th and 6th starts of his 10-race GN career.

Whitey Gerken - After missing the 1962 Daytona races because of a disqualification , Gerken returned in 1963. He finished 24th in his qualifier and missed the big show yet again.

Floyd Powell had a 6-race GN career from 1962-63. The Daytona races were his 3rd and 4th starts. He finished 15th in his twin which was good enough to give him a spot in the 500. He started 3 more races in the spring of 1963 but then passed away in August.

As is so often the case, the RR photo collection has some really great pictures that go right along with Tim's posts. I enjoy finding them and putting them in context with the narratives of the individual races.

The starting grid for the 1st qualifying trim with Jim Hurtubise in the Petty 42, Crawfish Crider in the 62 and Pete Stewart in the 57. Herk make the 500 with his 17th place finish. In a 3rd Petty car, Jim Paschal lost an engine in his #41 Plymouth during the 2nd twin, finished 23rd and did not make the 500. For the 500, the Pettys pulled Herk from the 42 and put Paschal behind the wheel. - Ron Wetzler

Al Terrell attempted to make the race. But he spun on the fifth lap, finished dead last in his qualifying race and failed to make the 500 starting lineup. - Danny Quick

Johnny Rutherford - J.C. Hayes Little Joe - Dennis Andrews

Father & Son Baker with Tiny - Jerry Bushmire

Tiny in victory lane - Dargan Watts

After getting snookered at the finish line by Little Joe in the inaugural 1961 race of champions event, Fireball pulled the same move a year later to win the second pre-Busch Clash, pre-The Winston, 'all star' race. The race was renamed from the Race Of Champions to the American Challenge Cup Sprint Race. From DBMJ .

Part of Speedweeks - but off premises. Couple of ads from Daytona paper . After running the drags on the DIS backstretch, the events were moved to a nearby airstrip.

Pat Purcell bounced 5 cars from the qualifying twins and subsequently the 500 for not being ready to participate in time trials. David Pearson and Johnny Allen were able to work out another ride for the twins and 500. But Tiger Tom, Whitey Gerken and Tubby Gonzalez did not. None of the 3 raced in either twin or the big show. Another infield shot - but I think this may be down near turn 4 vs. turn 1 where Tim was.
