Where's NASCAR Hall of Fame inductees David Pearson and Cale Yarborough?

Current NASCAR

Apparently the Pearsons - David, Larry and Ricky - were there last night at least part of the time. I found this pic on-line here:

Maybe they attended the NHOF dinner but then headed for home rather than stay for the induction ceremony. Perhaps Tim Leeming will know a bit more when he tells us about his experience of having been there last night.

Had hoped a few others who drove for Petty Enterprises might be there to recognize Chief's induction - Pete Hamilton specifically. Was then sad to hear Chief say Pete HAD planned to be there but was suffering through illness right now and had to miss the event. Hopefully its nothing too significant.

Was definitely tonight though no one but Humpy seemed to know the date. Ol' Harry even said it was the 20th I think. Ha.

Thank you too for validating my count. They said 13 on air, and several tweeted 13. Yet I counted time and again and only got 12.

I'm wondering if Pearson was there but had to duck out. They called his name at the beginning, but the camera couldn't find him. He may have been the scripted 13th to be on stage, and no one bothered to edit the count on the fly.

To be honest, based on the oft-told stories of Cale wanting appearance money for all sorts of things I'm not all that surprised he was missing.

The other living one who wasn't mentioned and I didn't see on stage was Glen Wood.

Legendtorial for January 28th.

Tim - I am among many I'm sure who are grateful for having met you through this site - at least on a cyberspace level. Ha. The world is a smaller place it seems because of the access we all have through the web, email, texting, etc.

This site has helped immensely in my long held goal of educating others (and myself) about the accomplishments of the Level Cross Petty clan. You have also helped stir my interest in simply learning a lot more about races in general from the 1950s through the 1980s.

I had the great fortune of having my parents take me to Nashville Speedway in the 1970s to watch a lot of the local hot shoes - and NASCAR's late model sportsman division - drivers take the quarter-mile and the 5/8 mile track. And my aunt and uncle took me to my 1st Cup race there as well.

I've researched a lot on my own to supplement what I saw first hand, watched on TV or listened to on MRN or URN. But this site - including folks you specifically helped me network Tim - really helped build my knowledge and various relationships within the sport over the last few years beyond what I'd grown to know in my 3 previous decades as a fan.

January 27th racing history

Well, he was a Spartanburg guy Dave. So I'll overlook that aspect of his life.

Monte Dutton also grew up as a Pearson fan, yet we've found ways to co-exist in our conversations. Haha. I like to remind him that the last 2 digits of his cell number are 43. He was quick to reply that the number was on a company-issued phone and that he would have chosen 1721 as his last 4 digits if given the option.

Ha. Yes, I noticed that too. But I figured I'd let the article run as published. Guess Granger had better days as a writer. And as Asst Sports Editor, his column may not have gotten that 2nd look befor going to press.

January 27th racing history

Stock Car Racing History

Though no Grand National races have been held on January 27th, that doesn't mean the absence of racing news.

1963 - The Southern Motorsports Press Association - later known as the National Motorsports Press Association - awarded the annual Myers Brothers Award to Hank Schoolfield, publisher of Southern Motorsports Journal (and later Southern MotoRacing and founder of Universal Radio Network). From Spartanburg Herald .

1965 - Before Jayski, rumors were often reported in traditional newspapers - including this one about David Pearson possibly moving to USAC because of the Chrysler boycott in NASCAR. From Spartanburg Herald .

1969 - Plymouth finally announced what was pretty well known by January 27th - that they would not have any factory supported teams for the 1969 season. From Spartanburg Herald .

NASCAR Hall of Fame 2014 intro videos

Stock Car Racing History

For the first couple of years of the NASCAR Hall of Fame, Speed Channel aired separate one-hour episodes for each inductee. More recently, the features were condensed into a single airing for all of the inductees. This year, I didn't get to see them at all because they aired on Fox Sports 2 - a channel I don't get on Comcast. But... I did find that they've been shared on YouTube. Thought you might enjoy them as I did.

Fireball Roberts

Happy Birthday to Buddy Baker

Stock Car Racing History

January 25th, 1941

Now THAT's a driver we need to have participate on RacersReunion. RR has several great photos of Buddy. But here are a couple of Buddy classics - one of him singing Butter Beans and two of him truly in his element: telling stories.
