The 1970 Cardinal 500 was featured in the April 1971 issue of Stock Car Racing mag. Perhaps someone still has it & could scan the pictures and article about the race.
Tri-City Speedway in High Point, NC hosted only two Grand National races. In the second and final one, Lee Petty dominated the 200-lap, 100-mile race on the half-mile, dirt track. Starting third, Petty took the lead on the seventh lap and led the remaining 194 laps en route to victory.
Though held in November 1954, the race was the 1955 Grand National season opener. The 1955 season was the first time NASCAR began a new season in the fall of the previous calendar year. The pattern was repeated several more times into the late 1960s. Brandon Reed wrote a nice column about NASCAR's approach to its season opener for GeorgiaRacingHistory.com .

Here is your answer re: Ned's winnings. Not a conspiracy. Just a generous action by a committed fan. Funny though that the $111 donated bonus was considered by NASCAR as "official" winnings. Source: News And Courier
Indeed. The post certainly caught me flat footed. Anticipating where I thought the direction Tim would go today, I had already searched and cropped an article for the 1961 season opener in November 1960 at Charlotte & won by Weatherly. From what I know, no pigs were involved with that one - unless Bruton Smith was possibly involved with promoting it.
Should have checked RR closer first. Dennis already posted the article and photo I included back in August 2012.
