Racing History Minute - October 13, 1953
Stock Car Racing History
Another piece of trivia tied to Paschal's win: His victory in car number 80 is the ONLY ONE for that number in the history of NASCAR's GN / Cup series.

I'm curious if I've found a discrepancy with Fielden's books - and the various websites that have borrowed from his info to build their content. This morning, I could not find a race recap article in the various archived newspapers I searched. But the search was odd anyway because I was looking at Wednesday, October 14, 1953 newspapers for events that happened on October 13th. Oct 13 was a Tuesday - a day that seemed odd to me for a race at Martinsville.
Then I found a copy of the program cover at Motor Racing Programme Covers indicating a GN race was held at Martinsville on October 18. That date was a Sunday - which makes more sense as a race date.
I also found a reference to Paschal's win in a 100-mile event on OCTOBER 18 at visitmartinsville.com:

I haven't found an article in October 19, 1953 papers yet either to confirm my hunch. But Oct 18 does seem to make more sense as a race date than Oct 13.
Not sure this photo is from Martinsville - but it is from 1953 when Paschal drove the #80 Dodge for George Hutchens.
Haven't found many more race reports. But did find a few more items promoting the race. I've concluded that in the early years, France & Co. were far more interested in newspaper awareness to COLLECT the dollars vs. articles with news about a race after the money had been COLLECTED.
One of the pre-race ceremonies mentioned in the race ad and preview articles was the presentation of the Southern 500 winner's trophy to Fonty Flock. The presentation was made by Miss North Carolina 1952, Barbara Anne Harris. How interesting that Fonty collected a trophy before AND after the race.
Barbara Anne is the only Miss NC to come from Salisbury NC.
Miss Harris didn't stay "Miss" for long. In the spring of 1953, she became engaged to become a Mrs.
Somewhere along the way though, the Spencer name disappeared and was replaced by a classic racing name: Richmond.

Only race report I could find. From Spartanburg Herald .
October 11, 1959: Starting fourth in his #42 Plymouth, Lee Petty motored to the front and won the 200-laps, 100-miles event at Asheville-Weaverville Speedway in North Carolina. Coincidentally, the race was the 42nd event of the 1959 season.
Tommy Irwin won the pole. With the race nearing half-way, however, he lost an engine and finished 28th - one spot ahead of Bob Welborn, who made several starts in NASCAR's Grand National and Convertible series driving for for Lee Petty's brother, Julian. The previous race at Asheville-Weaverville was the Western Carolina 500 just a couple of months earlier in August 1959. Welborn won the race, but he finished 29th - dead last - in the October one.
