25 Years Ago Today - Richmond International Raceway v.4.0

Stock Car Racing History

My subject line could be off a bit, but I think I'm close.

Richmond 1.0 - the rough and tumble, pockmarked pre-Paul Sawyer track

Richmond 2.0 - the half-mile dirt surface from the late 50s through the late 60s

Richmond 3.0 - the half-mile asphalt bullring from the late 60s through February 1988

Richmond 4.0 - the three-quarter mile asphalt wonder that hosted its first Cup race on September 11, 1988. Davey Allison in the Harry Ranier #28 Havoline Ford won the pole and the race. Click article for larger image and better resolution.

September 11, 1959 - Lee Petty Wins at Hickory

Stock Car Racing History

Earlier today, Tim Leeming posted about the [ September 11, 1964 Buddy Shuman 250 ] at Hickory. I also blogged today about the Buddy Shuman 250 - the 1959 edition on the same date and won by Lee Petty.

I don't know much about this race beyond what I found in Greg Fielden's Forty Years book. The starting line-up was set by blind draw vs. qualifying. Lap leaders aren't known other than Lee took the checkers. I couldn't find any newspaper clippings or photos from the race, and I've heard no personal anecdotes from anyone who attended.

But the race did take place - and a Petty did win! THAT much I know.

So read on for more:

Racing History Minute - September 10, 1978

Stock Car Racing History

Butch Lindley won the Harvest 150 late model sportsman companion race. Based on this news blurb from the Free Lance Star , the race was held on Sunday - the same day as the Cup event. I'm not sure if the LMS race was originally scheduled that way - or if it was perhaps postponed from Saturday because of rain.
