September 8, 1957: Lee Petty Aces Asheville-Weaverville

Stock Car Racing History

Starting 2nd in his #42 Oldsmobile, Lee Petty leads 46 of 200 laps and wins the 100-mile race on the half-mile, asphalt Asheville-Weaverville Speedway.

NASCAR Hall of Famer Cotton Owens started fourth and was the stud of the show. He led 131 laps, but he crashed and finished 16th in the 20-car field. Another NASCAR HOFer, Buck Baker, qualified third and finished second.

Many of us have enjoyed the writings of Tom Higgins over the years. This is the first race he covered as a professional motorsports writer.

Click on the image below & you'll link to a really neat Flickr photo set of 22 pictures from the 1959 Southern 500. Most are of the pre-race marching band and other pageantry stuff. But really neat COLOR pictures to see from that year.

Other September 7 Southern 500 winners

Stock Car Racing History

1953 - Buck Baker

Junior Johnson made his Grand National debut in his race. His day ended up like a lot of rookies' days - with a wrecked car. He also demonstrated a less-than-desirable-practice for fire fighting.

Tim Flock racing Herb Thomas ( Richard Guido )

The winner

1959 - Jim Reed

Lee and Richard Petty before the race - leaning against Lee's Daddy-O Plymouth. ( Carol Cain Henry )

Lee and Richard Petty's cars before the start of the race. ( Bill Rankin )

Two of the winner from a great thread at Randy Ayers Modeling Forum

A Goodyear ad emphasized the winner of the race - yet a rookie from Level Cross managed to get the larger photo in the 2 page spread. However, the day WAS meaningful for the future King as he led the first 7 laps of his young career in this race. Took him 25 starts to be shown as P1 for a few laps.

1970 - Buddy Baker

With deadline pressures, I guess local newspapers are entitled to those occasional mistakes.

Race footage is neat - but incomplete. Best I could find.

As expected, it was a good day for the winged Mopars.

3. Pete Hamilton, Petty Enterprises Plymouth

4. David Pearson, H&M Ford

September 7, 1952: Lee Whoops 'em in Macon

Stock Car Racing History

In some years, the Labor Day Southern 500 fell as late as September 7. In other years such as 1952, the race fell on the 1st of the month. By the time September 7 rolled around, the GN cars were ready for another race.

On September 7, 1952, Lee Petty followed up his 6th place finish in the Southern 500 win a win at Central City Speedway in Macon, GA. From an average finish perspective, Herb Thomas was even better. He finished 3rd at Darlington and 2nd at Macon.

Tim Flock dominated the race leading 210 of the 300 laps. Thomas got by Flock with about 40 to go and was sitting in the catbird's seat with 5 to go. He was about to back-up his 3rd at Darlington with a win at Macon. But he blew a tire and watched Lee pass him by as Herb drove the final laps helplessly on the rim of the blown tire.

Read on for more.

Secret of "The Legend's" Lawn Mower Revealed

General

I suspect Tim may be playing possum with us. A long-time King fan? Who takes the time each day to post Racing Minutes? He doesn't have time to PUSH a mower. And if he had that old Lowes mower, he'd likely have it mounted somehow in his lair. No sir, I think THIS is the Petty mower he tools about these days.

Jim Paschal takes 2nd in the #41 Petty Plymouth.

A great shot of Paschal at speed. But what in the dickens is he looking at? Face forward Jim! You can look at RacersReunion updates when the race is done.

From News And Courier

Speed limits for pit road. Just a contemporary safety enhancement? Not exactly. While not enforced by NASCAR and not observed by drivers, at least Bob Colvin tried to create awareness I suppose.

A week after the race, the following ad ran in the Daytona Beach Morning Journal .

Tim Leeming and company  living the good life that weekend. With all that sun and liquid refreshments, I wonder if Tim needed "LeemingAid" when the weekend was done.

Junior Johnson and Li'l Bud Moore get together

And H.B. Bailey (04) and Darel Dieringer (16) get caught up in it too.

Fast Freddy qualified 3rd even with a Darlington stripe. But a hard crash during the race relegated him to 22nd.

The winning car was featured in a subsequent Goodyear ad.
