Racing History Minute - July 29, 1955

Stock Car Racing History

Might be a good time to see if I can better ID the date of this picture. I found it some time ago as part of an article about NY GN races at HubGarage.com .

The caption says "circa 1968". GN cars only raced at Altamont-Schenectady Fairgrounds twice - 1951 and 1955. GN did race at Albany-Saratoga in 1970-1971 (though it was in nearby Malta - go figure), and King won them both. The 5 cities are all within about 20-30 miles or so of each other. I suppose Schenectady Plymouth could have advertised at either track. But with GN NOT running at either of these 2 tracks in 66, 67, or 68, I confused by when this could be. Richard has a Firestone patch on his uni. Not sure when he switched (or NASCAR overall) to Goodyear. But by 70-71, he certainly had made the switch.

MIGHT have been at Fonda NY where Richard won in 1968 - and Fonda is about 30 miles from Schenectady.

I'm wondering if this was some sort of non-GN promotional "match race" or other event where The King raced with the local guys. Any insights?

July 29th - Paschal and Petty Victories

Stock Car Racing History

Today, I found a pretty cool 1 minute video of the 1972 Pennsylvania 500 USAC stock car race on Flickr. This is the race the year BEFORE Richard won the Acme 500 USAC race at Pocono. He didn't fare so well in the '72 edition. The 43 lost an engine. The car was loaded and the truck was gone before Roger McCluskey took the checkers.

Unfortunately, the video doesn't allow embedding. So you'll have to go to Flickr to watch it. But its worth the trip!

I just KNOW there must a non-watermarked version of the victory lane photo out there somewhere. The one with RP and Linda Vaughn. I pulled the post together pretty quickly over the weekend and didn't do an extensive search. But I'm sure its out there and would like to find a copy.

July 29th - Paschal and Petty Victories

Stock Car Racing History

Bristol wasn't particularly a good track for Richard Petty. He won there only 3x despite the thousands of laps he logged on the East Tennessee half-mile. But on July 29, 1962, Petty Enterprises teammate Jim Paschal put one in the PE win column with a victory in Bristol's 2nd annual Southeastern 500. Good chicken money for the Pettys that day too as Richard was 3rd and Bunkie Blackburn 8th.

One year before NASCAR brought its Winston Cup series to Pocono, The King free-lanced on an open weekend and won the Acme Super Saver 500 USAC stock car race there on July 29, 1973.

YOU HAVE SEEN THE BEST THAT INDIANA HAS THIS WEEK

Haha. Nice work.

Also, may I suggest when it comes to sports that "statues" for critics are sometimes known as empty seats? Not a universal truth granted but in this case... ?

Reading now that IMS is considering adding lights to help spice up fan interest in the 400. Umm, yeah. Sure. Haha

YOU HAVE SEEN THE BEST THAT INDIANA HAS THIS WEEK

Stock Car Racing History

This weekend is a joke and has been for many years. What was a bit humorous before is now an outright gut-buster with the addition of the Nationwide and GrandAm races. All the drivers, owners and media go on and on about the grand traditions of Indy. But only ONE of those traditions belongs to them - the kissing of the bricks. I always hear the names Foyt, Andretti, Unser, Mears, etc. mentioned. I don't hear Earnhardt, Jarrett, Rudd, Elliott, etc. I hear the names of Gordon and Johnson mentioned in the same breath as Super Tex, Rick and Al - yet I roll my eyes knowing four 400 wins aren't close to being comparable to four 500 wins. I'm a NASCAR lifer, yet I have all the respect in the world for the Indy 500!

This farce of an event doesn't merit being on the schedule. In my brutally harsh opinion, the drivers and owners like it for 3 reasons: (1) Indy's CHAMP CAR traditions (2) it pays very well and (3) their sponsors don't know the difference. Tony Stewart chastised the media (and in turn us as fans/viewers) because we supposedly don't know the difference between Racing and Passing. Easy for him to say - he is getting PAID to be there. Fans have to PAY for a ticket or PAY a cable/dish fee to watch it. And my dollars and time go elsewhere.

NASCAR has proved its point. It went to Indy when conventional wisdom said it couldn't. And its had a solid 20 year run - although only the first 4 or 5 were the ones anyone cared about. As Tim Leeming's Racing Minutes have shown, NASCAR can pick up its circus tent and move to another location after only a handful of races - maybe even only one. Its time for this Brickyard Boredom to move on down the road to a venue more suitable for its type of racing.

I watched the first 10-15 laps on TV. Then I moved to the computer as the TV played in the background for the next 30-40 laps. Then I had lunch downstairs as the TV continued upstairs. I returned after all that to see the 48 still leading with the rest of the field in line like an elementary school fire drill. Finally just past half way, I took my teen daughter for a driving lesson and surprise ice cream visit. Best use of the afternoon without question.

It was a pleasure to chat a bit again with Paul Lewis at the Harley Davidson event in Charlotte back in May. I was able to introduce him to a couple of buds of mine who weren't familiar with Paul's racing contributions and accomplishments.
