Racing History Minute - June 6, 1965

Stock Car Racing History

A few hours to the northeast in Bristol TN, the straight line crowd raced without rain. King Richard scored a win in his class.

Nothing can really be done to keep rain from falling on a speedway. It happens. We've all been at a race where its been delayed, shortened, or postponed. But on this day, I'm guessing fans could not have been happy. They got to see incomplete qualifying, a seemingly arbitrary decision to set the starting line-up, barely half a race, and almost half the laps "raced" under the yellow.

June 5, 1960 - Lee Petty Rolls to a Richmond Win

Stock Car Racing History

June 5, 1960 - Ned Jarrett notches his first NASCAR Grand National pole for the Richmond 200. But Lee Petty battled Rex White and some mid-race drama to claim the race win. Lee's victory was his 52nd - he only won twice more before his career was all but ended (and almost his life) at Daytona the next February.

And on the same day the GN cars were racing in Maryville, the folks at Charlotte Motor Speedway were fussin' and feudin' with local politicians about taxes. WHAT?? No way you say. Couldn't happen. Yep - seems that crowd has been squabbling since the track was originally envisioned.

And in this day-of-race, promotional article in the Spartanburg Herald Journal , we find some really neat trivia such as:

  • Pearson's Dodge was a former show car
  • Cotton Owens bought the show car with the intent his son would drive it
  • Tiger Tom and Tiny Lund were permitted to run twin carburetors on their Fords. Someone help me - was this a concession made to Ford by NASCAR to keep them in the fold? Chrysler sat out much of 1965 but then returned later in the season and returned to winning ways in 1966. Didn't Ford then threaten to pull out in 66? If so, maybe the decision to allow dual carbs was a peace offering by Bill France.
  • Henley Gray raced a Ford driven by Ned Jarrett a week or so earlier in the World 600.

And race report from the June 4 evening Banner. I couldn't find a report in the June 4 morning Tennessean. My guess is the race ended too late to make the deadline for the early edition of the paper, which is probably what was archived to microfilm.

Dull? DULL?? WHAT? You can't criticize the product per Brian France. Didn't Bill Parker know that way back in '65?

Back in town after many days on the road. Used lunch today to visit the Nashville library again. While 10 days or so late, here is some info from the local Nashville papers about the race.

A promo story for the race from the June 3, 1965 Tennessean.

And from the June 3, 1965 Nashville Banner - great pub for Wendell Scott, especially considering the times.
