Racing History Minute - April 20, 1952
Stock Car Racing History
Would be nice if Bill Blair Jr or someone else had a better version of this T. Taylor Warren picture I found in the High Point Enterprise.
Dayton had a star crossed season. The track experienced another spectacular and deadly crash Labor Day weekend of 1952.

As was often the case in that era, the race didn't get much coverage in the papers. Spartanburg's Herald-Journal gave the race just a few words about the winner and the next few finishers.
But the headline racing story for April 20, 1952, was a sensationalistic one. A horrific crash in Dayton, OH claimed the lives of 4 people and injured 50 others. Source: Herald-Journal
Barely under the midnight wire of EDT. Busy day on the road. Now in Orlando after an earlier week trip to Philly and NJ.
Who woulda thunk it. April 18, 1999. John Andretti rallied late to win at Martinsville. JOHN ANDRETTI?? Yes. But even more remarkable than John's individual win is that it turned out to be the final Cup win for the storied Petty Enterprises team. 1999! Nothing in the 2000s. Y2K turned out to be a prolonged death knell for the Level Cross bunch.
But at least PE's winning ways went out in style that April weekend with a Martinsville sweep. Andretti took the Sunday show - and Jimmy Hensley nabbed Saturday's truck race.

Neither the Danville Bee or Petersburg's Progress-Index had anything that I noted. Have said it before and will again, I REALLY want to get hold of the archives for RIchmond's papers. But not willing to go through their paywall for the price offered at this time.
Who among our RR members lives in Richmond area? Would be great if someone would go to the library or state archives to scroll through microfilm and snap images of articles and photos. Also, Virginia residents may have access to RTD archives on-line for free through a library card. Unable to do so myself - but hopefully a member or two in the greater RIchmond area would enjoy that sort of research.
No, but hasn't been for lack of effort. Have searched high and low for more news clippings and ads for the race. But nothing more to add.
Our topics aligned today Tim. Was a bit tough finding much info on that 1st Richmond race. But I did what I could. Read on for more:
