April 12, 1970 - Pete Pockets Talladega

Stock Car Racing History

As Tim Leeming mentioned in his post about April 12th, few races have been held on this date. And from a personal standpoint, the 1958 Bowman-Gray race has had far lasting impact on the life of Randy Myers than other races held on this day.

But other races were indeed held on April 12 - including the inaugural Alabama 500 at Talladega on April 12, 1970. So on this day in Petty history...

Here is a link to a blog entry I posted today about Pete Hamilton's win in that race driving a Petty Enterprises #40 Plymouth Superbird.

Its wins like this by Petty cars that further validate Maurice Petty's credentials for the NASCAR Hall of Fame. He drove cars briefly, he built the engines for almost all of Richard's wins, and he crew chiefed drivers of other Petty cars to victory such as this one by Hamilton.

And as easy as it is to take potshots at NASCAR - then and now - the officials have always had a tough time working through scheduling logistics. ESPECIALLY when rain is involved AND when multiple races are affected. Check out the logjam BIll France's folks had to work through in early 1964.

Ad for April 12, 1964 GN race in Hillsboro

Love the confident banter between Junior Johnson and Dick Hutcherson in this preview. Considering Hutch finished 2nd and Junior 9th, I'd say Dick got the upper hand that day.

Very interesting. Thanks Tim for the post and Randy for your sharing the info about your dad. I knew about Billy's passing in '58. I did NOT know the circumstances.

And by the way, I might have a little perspective on that 1970 Talladega win to post tomorrow.

"Ooh, you went there, didn't you?"

RP: You know that Fulton fella?

AA: Yes, I know him.

RP: Take him out.

AA: Out? C'mon King. That's pretty harsh.

RP: You want more bacon? Out. I ain't a'sayin it again. And this conversation never happened.

This race was one of many Easter Monday GN races hosted at Bowman Gray Stadium.

The race was the first on the track after a recent repaving project.

Race report from Benny Phillips of the High Point Enterprise.
