1986 Richmond. Hmm, do we know this guy?
Stock Car Racing History
I probably had it but tossed it. After all, I collected Petty related pics for my scrap books - not Dave Fulton photos. haha

Victory lane - Richmond Fairgrounds Raceway. That's winner Kyle Petty on the right. But who is that mustachioed feller to the left?
And is the guy perhaps the same one referenced in the story in this video? Pick up the story at 2 minute mark.
Just checked - and how 'bout this. Chief and Combover Cale were born on SAME DAY of SAME YEAR. March 27, 1939. That's a whole lot of greatness born to the Carolinas.
From the way I've heard Tom Higgins tell the story, it was Ms. Elizabeth's snub nosed .38 in her purse that did the trick when she whopped it upside Tiny's head. haha
First, happy birthday to the Chief -Maurice Petty. Now let's get him into the NASCAR Hall of Fame.
Second, March 27, 1960 - Poppa Lee wins ... again. At Wilkesboro ... again. Amidst some controversy ... again. I'll give Lee Petty credit for one thing. He wasn't afraid to pick a battle with Junior Johnson on his own turf. Not something most drivers would choose to do.

The Kansas Lottery has sponsored Nationwide and ARCA races for the last few years. And in early 1990s, New Hampshire's NASCAR Busch North races were sponsored by that state's lottery.
In last fall's season-ending truck race at Homestead, Nelson Piquet, Jr. was sponsored by the Florida Lottery & Dakoda Armstrong had the same sponsor a day later in the Nationwide race.

As long as the checks clear, I guess the gub'munt money spends as easy as corporate dollars. Not sure I agree with that - but hey it wouldn't be the first time.
This was 1992 spring race at Marty.

Pretty sure I have a pic at home from Winston Cup Scene or Southern MotoRacing of Bodine rushing to Kyle's car with a fire extinguisher. Will have to look for it and scan it if I can find it.
As for an early version of a HANS, hmm. Never heard that before. But I remember KP being an early adopter of a full-face helmet and a fire-resistant head "sock". So it wouldn't surprise me if he also was willing to demo another type of safety device.
Wonder if he'd shed any light on the question on Twitter. Not sure he would. This season, he seems to have adopted the M.O. of smacking down folks who crack on him. Long gone seem the days when he'll answer a legit question.
Interesting you mention the need to have SAFERs everywhere. While I don't have data to support it, I just feel like non-SMI tracks have been lacking in putting them everywhere the last few years. I'm basing it on a few wrecks I can recall, and I may be off. But it just seems that way.
Elliott Sadler 2010 Cup hit at Pocono
Miguel Paludo 2012 Truck wreck at Daytona
Danica 2012 Nationwide wreck at Daytona
Mark Martin 2012 Cup hit against Michigan pit wall
Hamlin 2013 Cup at Cali
I'm not looking to pile on ISC or Pocono (especially Brandon Igdalsky & his team have upgraded Pocono). And I know SMI tracks weren't perfect (e.g. Jeff Gordon at Vegas). But it would be interesting to know what sort of risk assessment ISC's staff go through to determine where SAFER barriers should be installed and where its presumed they aren't needed.
A week or so ago, Sterling Marlin's daughter Sutherlin gave birth to a boy. Don't know length, weight, name and all that biz. But based on a couple of tweets she posted, sounds like all is well.
