Danica eligible for Cup ROTY in 2013?

Current NASCAR

Zackly. For years, I enjoyed watching Cup ROTY candidates - until about 10-12 years ago when most were first in a class of one. First year drivers REALLY became irrelevant 3 years ago when they became the start-and-park crowd because of the huge mounds of money needed to fund a team and driver.

With Danica, NASCAR will once again have a 'name' they can promote as a rookie - even though technically she hit that long-standing traditional 10-race threshold a year ago.

At the end of the day, I guess its not THAT big a deal to me - other than the constant looseness with which NASCAR plays with its own rules. Plus, I'm thinking with one to two more years, she'll be out of Cup anyway.

And it will be interesting to see if they play the no-points-earned card. The DRIVER may not have earned her points on the Cup side last year. But the OWNER of record certainly did. Tommy Baldwin Racing banked those points each week as Reutimann tried to keep the team in the top 35 and she what she could to take them out of it. haha

Danica eligible for Cup ROTY in 2013?

Current NASCAR

From Jayski:

2013 silly season notes for #10-Danica Patrick / Stewart Haas Racing : Patrick moves up from the Nationwide Series to run the full 2013 Sprint Cup Season. No word if she will be eligible to be a rookie of the year candidate as she didn't run for Cup points and the rules are unclear for the award since drivers had to declare which series they would run for points in 2011. Patrick ran 10 Sprint Cup races in 2012, which normally would make a driver ineligible for the ROTY award. Crew Chief Tony Gibson moved over to the #10 SHR Chevy from the #39 SHR camp to be Patrick's crew chief late in the 2012 season. Been told that Patrick is committed to the #10 and there are NO plans to switch from #10 to the #7. GoDaddy.com returns to sponsor the car for the full slate of races in 2013. See more about other teams on my 2013 Team / Driver Silly Season Chart .(1-2-2013)

There can be no doubt NASCAR will qualify her for ROTY this year, right? As a reminder, look at the names of the ROTY from the last 3 years:

  • 2012 - Steven Leicht
  • 2011 - Andy Lally
  • 2010 - Kevin Conway

Oh yeah, she'll be eligible.

Do you have 1950s era NSSN or similar?

Stock Car Racing History

Have to laugh about fractured memories to go along with a lot of fractured "official" NASCAR records. As you say, Fireball isn't listed in the Airborne / Plattsburgh rundown - nor in the previous Fonda race. But in looking at his career, he NEVER ran a GN race at Fonda. haha

Ooh. Good lead. Thanks so much Dave. Despite efforts to look in all directions, I've developed a bit of tunnel vision with my search for info about these PE wins. Once I started digging into Google News Archives, its been a real treasure trove of info about Petty wins - as well as all sorts of NASCAR stories.

I've also combed SCR, SMR, SMJ, NSSN, Google, YouTube, eBay, etc. to dig for info. But I have no idea how many niche sites are out there such as this one for Plattsburgh.

Stock Car Racing History

I'm down to 13 races won by Lee Petty without an old news article, National Speed Sport News clipping, Illustrated Speedway News issues, etc. I have Greg Fielden's Forty Years of Stock Car Racing books to draw from as well as Perry Allen Wood's Silent Speedways of the Carolinas for a couple of them. But I'd like some old news articles to help round out the blog entries I'm preparing for these races.

If you have old newspapers, racing periodicals, or an interest in visiting a local library to crawl through microfilm for the following races, please e-mail me at toomuchcountry (at) gmail (dot) com. Thanks!

Stock Car Racing History

Do you have access to 1950s era issues of National Speed Sport News, local newspaper clippings about races, Southern Motorsports Journal, etc.? I'm trying to track down any sort of article I can on wins by Petty Enterprises drivers.

I've managed to find something via Google News Archive or other sources for all but about 20 of Petty Enterprises' 73 wins with a driver other than the King. The ones I still need info for all wins by Lee Petty during the 1950s.

I'm curious if you have anything in your collections about 1950s races at places like Martinsville, Richmond, A-W, B-G, Hickory, Hillsboro/Occoneechee, and Columbia. Northern races would be a bonus: Grand Rapids, Sharon PA, Plattsburgh NY, Rochester NY, Morristown NJ, and Old Bridge NJ.

If you have info from that era & could scan and email it to me, please send me a message here or e-mail me at toomuchcountry (at) gmail (dot) com. I'd like to include the info in a blog series I've got planned for 2013. I'll be sure to include credit/courtesy for any material I use.

Thanks!

Racing's Analogy to the Fiscal Cliff

Stock Car Racing History

To add some levity to a truly fiscal crisis, I strung together a few videos to help illustrate the fiscal cliff - racing style. Enjoy. And laugh if you can.

Worthy of RacersReunion Radio Live Broadcast Coverage?

General

Back in mid 90s, fellow SHOFer Philly and I took our wives - with marriages still both pre-kids - to New England. Had a ball for a week making up our itinerary as we went along. I remember seeing the signs for Falmouth as we headed for Hyannis Port and later Provincetown, looking at Philly, smirking & knowing we couldn't resist. We cussed a blue streak in the car for as long as we could before laughing too hard and getting whipped upside the head by our wives like Ruth Buzzi's Gladys on Laugh-In.
