June 19, 1969: The King wins in ... Kingsport

Stock Car Racing History

My uncle who intro'd me to racing and insisted I become a Petty fan lived many years in Knoxville, Tri-Cities, and western NC. He started following Richard because of his own affinity with Plymouths. He told me that on more than one occasion he was able to meet and just chat with Richard at car dealerships around Kingsport and Maryville.

June 19, 1969: The King wins in ... Kingsport

Stock Car Racing History

Richard Petty closes in on victory #100 with his win in the inaugural GN race at Kingsport Speedway in TN - a city appropriately named based on Petty's performance.

Also, RacersReunion members might recognize the name on the by-line of the embedded article.

Edited: June 19, 2014 - copying text of my 2012 blog post here.

1969 - Starting third, Richard Petty banks his 95th career NASCAR Grand National victory by winning the Kingsport 250 at Kingsport Speedway in east Tennessee.

Racing a Ford, Petty capitalized on the misfortunes of Bobby Isaac. Leading the race by 2 laps over the field, Isaac lost an engine in his Dodge. The King took over from there and won the race.

The race was the inaugural Grand National event at the .4 mile, paved track. Kingsport hosted three races from 1969 through 1971. Petty repeated his win at the track in 1970, and Isaac finally got his win at the track in the final GN race there.

June 18, 1967: RP is King of the Rock

Stock Car Racing History

I'd grown to love Google News Archive in doing research for these Petty themed posts. Just killed me when I learned late last year that Google made the decision to no longer add new content to it. For now, the existing content is there - however, its tougher to find it sometimes and no new papers will be added. Because there is no certainly how long the archives will remain, I generally screen-cap any articles I want to keep.

Stock Car Racing History

Richard Petty wins the Carolina 500 at Rockingham.

Contemporary race fans don't know how good they've got it with event scheduling and fan amenities. To recall the Grand National circuit once ran Rockingham, Atlanta's Dixie 500, Daytona's Firecracker 400, the Talladega 500 and Darlington's Southern 500 all during the summer and ALL during the day... whew, I'm sweating just thinking about it.

I never had the opportunity to catch a true, Labor Day Southern 500 (though I did go a November race at the time thought to be the final Southern 500). Any my trips to Rockingham and Atlanta were always spring and fall. But I went to several Talladega and Daytona summer races - and believe I drained 30 pounds of sweat into the ground. Ahh, the good ol' days, right?

Anyway, the blog entry is about Rockingham. Almost forgot! :-)

Happy Nation

Current NASCAR

That was a Batman car? I just figured his car and uniform suffered the same fate as my car frequently does when parked too long under a shade tree.

June 16, 1974: Richard Petty wins the Motor State 400

Stock Car Racing History

Today is the anniversary of the King's win in Michigan International Speedway's Motor State 400. Whoops, make that the Motor State 360 with 10 percent of the race cut as an acknowledgment of the nation's energy crisis.

It was also a red-letter day for singer Marty Robbins who notched a career best 5th place finish. Photo from collection of RR's John Betts .
