in order to get a quicker responce in the steering proccess, we used to legthen the Pittman Arms.
This worked great on a paved track, but on a dirt track with holes in it the arm could. bottom out and get bent.
One that stands out1
At Henderson NC , I was approached by red neck, who offord me $100.00 to take out Wendell Scott ( 1st place paid $100.00). I told him Hell No. No second thoughts.

During that time I raced (not very competitve) Curtis Turner, Fireball Robert, Billy & Bobby Myers, Wendell Scott, Lee Petty, Joe Weatherly And Many More!
I helped Big Bill, Joe Epton,and Jimmie Chesnut get the Raleigh Speedway get started.
I raced in the first race at Champion (Fayettville NC ) and got 3rd. Big Bill paid me in cash $35.00 .
I never had the money to competethe way I would have liked, but I had fun.
I lost a good job as a salesman becuase the Salesmanager felt that "driving stock cars was a trashy sport".
Now in my twilight years, I think of many racing memories.
Boy was I lucky!

Back in the 40s and 50s when I lived in Raleigh, Jesse Jones was my favorite!
I drove at BG about 15 times in the early 50s and Bill France Jr's main job was sweeping the track after the Heat Races.
His dad taught him from the ground up.
To bad Big Bill was not around to teach Brian.
Herb did not pull his car to the track. He drove it there from Sanford.
That little 265 cubic inch was so strong he was able to handle all the other cars with ease.
He got out of the track ASAP.
The Ford people were upset.
It was a High Banked 1/3 mile built for stock car racing.
I drove there many times.
