The Future (2010) of Vintage Racing at the Rock

Vintage Oval and Road Course Racing

After giving it some thought here's my two cents..."...money...trophies. What is an acceptable entry fee?" I like the trophy idea, money might/would encourage drivers to put their car where it don't belong. As for an entry fee, the cost to cover insurance, if we're not racing for money the entry fee should be kept to a minimum."And we would need to guarantee a minimum of 10 cars per show." If the vintage race is a part of a weekly modern racing series, yes, 10 cars is possible. If the vintage cars are the feature racing of the night I'd include all the clubs on the same night. The deal with CapeFear-CARS is we are an "all inclusive" racing club at the moment. Bottom line is if you own a vintage stock car with a pre-1949 all steel bodied american made car you can race with us. As of now we don't have a latemodel sportsman class so anything that does not fit in our V-8 and 6 cylinder class falls under the "Open class" where the limits are much broader. Our club is designed for driver and fan entertainment, hence "Classic Auto Racing "Show" however we do end up racing as hard as any, just that the odds are stacked a little higher for some due to the lenient rules on what is acceptable.I stated earlier that we are a dirt track club but I'm sure we could muster enough cars for a show on asphalt. As of now we are in the infancy of being a club so the car count is a little lean, but should reach the 10-12 cars mark by summer.

Jeff, I'm going to give it some thought before replying with too much but I will say that the CapeFear-CARS is a dirt track racing club. Not to say that any one of the members won't switch over to asphalt tires but it's unlikely the majority will to run races. However, we are always up for some exhibition laps and display.Since our club neither races for money or trophies I will not form an opinion on this.My advice is too contact every club to get your answers since many members may not be using the internet.

Gilder Bear 3 at the Rock

General

What another memorable day and a great way to start off the new year. Jeff Gilder really made some changes since the October ARCA race and put the vintage cars front and center stage with 3 laps of 26 vintage stock cars in front of a large crowd at Rockingham for the Polar Bear 150 Frank Kimmel street stock race.We had a great time as usual, hanging out around the cars with all the drivers is half the fun and the street stock racing was pretty good also. Sixty-five cars started and there were only about 20 left at the checkers, lot's of big ones' took it's toll. Chuck Barnes from Louisville, Kentucky won the race ( http://www.rockinghamracewaypark.com/ )Twenty six vintage stock cars were on hand and they looked good out there in the Gilder Bear 3 lap exhibition. It was much funner than the last time we ran 3 laps before the crowd showed up. This time we had the fans taking photos and kids and old alike pointing at the thundering roar of old stock cars. I glance up at the crowd and not a single fan was texting, all eyes were on the cars.As always, the East Coast Flatheads came out in force, the Billy Biscoe crew, Memory Lane Museum (Concord) and Mean Gene Hobby (see http://www.legendsofnascar.com/Gene_Hobby.htm for Gene Hobby's nascar career info.) from the Occoneechee Historical group were on hand and a few racers from the Tarheel vintage late model club showed along with a couple from the Southern Ground Pounders. I'm sure I'm leaving someone out, my apology's.The biggest thanks goes out to Andy Hillenburg and Rockingham Speedway and Jeff Gilder of RacersReunion.com, without their hard work and commitment none of this would be possible. Thanks guys!!PS. The hotdogs were banginCheck these photos out by Sandy McKenzie http://www.localracechat.com/forums/showthread.php?t=58275

Name these drivers

Uncategorized

The coupe on the left is probably a Raymond Parks `39 Ford Standard coupe around 1947-48 and is probably Reb Byron's car by the look of the number #2 on the right headlight..giving the other side carried a 2 (#22).

Occoneechee/Old Orange County Speedway threatened

Historic Speedways and Ghost Tracks

I'm wondering if we applied for a demonstration permit if we couldn't turn it into a festival of preserving Occoneechee at the same time. Start somewhere a couple miles from the track and march in protest of the development plan to the gates of the track. Call WRAL to do a story about our plight. Let the racing public know what the DOT wants to do to our racing history.
