Charter Chatter: Wood Brothers No Longer a part of Race Team Alliance (RTA)

Current NASCAR

Co-owner Eddie Wood classified the team's existence in the RTA as "a square peg trying to be in a round hole."

Yeah, we are disappointed [about not getting a charter] but it gets back to what I said that the model we used to stay racing in 2009 caused this not to happen," Eddie Wood said. "I wouldnt turn around and switch it for that win with Trevor [Bayne]here if you gave me two charters. That is how much winning the race means. It is this race. Not just a race, the race. This race is above all others. I dont care if it is Indy, Le Mans, this race is above all others.

Clipped from the article Devin linked to. I'd say Eddie gets what racing is all about more than the other owners or NASCAR.

A Family Tradition

Trivia

That would be correct Chase. Her other victories had been on dirt.

LOL, I knew you or Alex would probably answer the trivia. I started to ask you not to answer until 3 others had tried, just to keep it going longer. I'll give less clues on the next one. Hope you have as much fun with them as I do.

A Family Tradition

Trivia

The name Earnhardt is almost always near the top of any any list of racing families. Ralph, Dale, Dale Jr., Kelly and Kerry are a few of the family that have sat behind the wheel of a race car. In July of 1975 Dale was third in points at the Hickory Speedway behind Harry Gant and Tommy Houston when another Earnhardt made the headlines by entering an event at Hickory after recording six victories. What was the event and who entered it?

That's cool BB. I was searching the old inter web for Biscoe Speedway news and ran across this article. I've never heard you talk about it so I thought I'd give you a high five for the accomplishment.

Grand American 100 - October 24, 1970

Stock Car Racing History

Dave, Whenever Ernie Shaw did not want to be bothered or give the real reason for a DNF he would grin and say technical problems. As far as I know Reid Shaw who owned the cars dad drove from '69 thru '71 and Ernie were not kin.

Grand American 100 - October 24, 1970

Stock Car Racing History

Grand American 100

North Carolina Motor Speedway

Rockingham, North Carolina

Saturday, October 24, 1970

Grand American race #35, the last of 1970, was held at the North Carolina Motor Speedway, the one mile speedway where the first Grand Touring race had taken place in 1968. Starting positions were determined by two 10 lap heat races. Based on published reports they were won by David Pearson in the Melvin Joseph Mustang and Jim Paschal in his American Performance Center Javelin. Series Champion Tiny Lund would start at the tail end of the field after a series of problems. He blew the engine in his Ronnie Hopkins prepared Camaro during practice shortly after noon. With the help of Warren Prout and the American Motors crew another engine was installed just in time to make the first heat race where a broken distributor shaft caused another scramble that ended just in time for the drop of the green on the 100 lap event.

Paschal led the first 9 laps before Pearson went to the front. By lap 15 Lund had sliced through the field to take second with Paschal third. Lund surged to the lead on lap 21 and held off Paschal until lap 38. Paschal then held the top spot shadowed by Pearson until lap 55 when Lund drove between the pair on the back stretch and was never headed again. Pearson fell out on lap 75 with an engine problem and Paschal had to back off with 5 to go because of a tire going down but was still credited with second place. Friday Hassler finished third in the Camaro entered by James Hylton. It may have been the same #48 Camaro that had been driven by Hylton, Sonny Hutchins and Bob Glass earlier in the year.

Lund collected $1,550 for his 19 th win of the season before a crowd of 8,000.

Not only did Tiny win the point championship in 1970 but he also received the Most Popular Driver award. David Boggs was voted Rookie of the Year.

#54 Bobby Fleming, #49 David Pearson, #55 Tiny Lund and #86 David Boggs at North Carolina Motor Speedway, Rockingham, North Carolina.
