ASHEVILLE 300 July 31, 1970

Stock Car Racing History

Hey Chase, I thought of including this but did not because dad did not finish second that time. This was the beginning of a bad streak of engine problems. Also the 1970 season seemed to have more third places finishes but I would be the only one to notice that. One correction on the article, the Cougars carried 1968 and 1970 bodies. I have conflicting reports on the winners share of the purse, this article says $1,400. Others say $1,300 and $1,000. Thanks for posting though, the article does help record the history of the series.

Grand American race #24 of 1970 was held at the New Asheville Speedway a 1/3 mile paved oval. Tiny Lund started on the pole and led the first 4 laps before Jim Paschal moved to the front and built a lap lead when T.C. Hunts blown engine brought out the caution on lap 49. After the restart Lund mounted a challenge to Paschal finally making a move that led to 2 laps of door to door racing. Just as Lund completed the pass Wayne Andrews had the engine let go in Dub Simpsons Cougar bringing out the second caution. It was the second engine failure of the day for Andrews after loosing the engine in his regular ride during practice. On the restart it was Lund, Paschal and Baker until lap 114 when Paschal attempted a pass entering turn two. Contact spun Tiny bringing out caution number 3. Both cars pitted under the yellow but Paschal returned just as the green came back out. By the time he returned to the track after repairing fender damage he was 2 laps down to Baker who was now leading. Right after the restart Lunds car started to cough and sputter until he retired on lap 121 with fuel pump trouble. By now Baker had a 2 lap lead on Paschal who was about to mount a charge. In just 24 green flag laps he caught Baker and made up one of the laps. Baker tried to pick up the pace but in less than 100 laps Paschal caught and passed him again. (After the race it was discovered Baker had a right side tire that was worn all the way to the fabric.) Just one lap after getting back on the lead lap caution #4 came out for a spinning David Boggs. This allowed Paschal to close up to Bakers bumper for the restart. It took 13 laps to get around the determined Baker but Paschal went back to the lead on lap 251 and held it to the end to score his third win of the year in his Warren Prout prepared Javelin with Baker less than a second behind him. Boggs recovered to finish third but was 13 laps behind at the finish.

Paschal took home $1,000 of the $8,000 purse. There were 4 cautions for 21 laps. Only 9 of the 16 starters were running at the finish.

Looking For Information on Buck Baker's Truck Series

Stock Car Racing History

Alex, RR member Robert Turner has posted a few pictures from this series.

Tom Usry won this one at Georgia International. Robert Turner photo.

Usry wins again. Not sure where this one is. I'm pretty sure the guy second from the left is RR member David Boggs. He may be source of info., I'll send him a message.

Looking For Information on Buck Baker's Truck Series

Stock Car Racing History

Alex, Bobby Fleming still has a body shop and lives in Danville, Virginia. It should not be hard to get in contact with him. I bet he could help. I know he won one of those races at Atlanta and owned the truck that Bobby Allison dove.

After the race at Flemington the season long point standings were as follows:

1. Tiny Lund, 1152; 2. Wayne Andrews, 1137; 3. Ken Rush, 1131; 4. T.C. Hunt, 1066; 5. Buck Baker, 1038; 6. Phil Wills, 1031; 7. Jim Paschal, 1028; 8. Richard Childress, 1007; 9. Grand American race #23 of 1970 was held at International Raceway Park a 7/16 mile paved oval. It was the fifth of a 5 event STP Northern Tour after a 530 mile trip from Flemington on Tuesday and the second visit to Ona in 1970. Starting line ups were determined by qualifying heats won by Tiny Lund and Gary Myers.

Tiny Lund led all but 6 laps to record his 16 th win of 1970 with Buck Baker second.

Lund earned $1,400 of the $8,455 purse. Of note on the purses for the Tour events was how the funds were distributed. The payout did not drop off as fast as you went down the order. No finisher got less than $200.

Twenty three cars took the green and there were 7 cautions for 54 laps.

Not knowing how the points were calculated I cant say for sure who won the STP Northern Tour but a good bet would be Buck Baker as he had 2 wins, a second, a fourth and a 6 th place finish for an average finish of 2.8. No one who made all the tour events came close to that mark. Thirty nine different drivers took part in the tour with 17 running all 5 races. Just based on average finishing position alone the top 10 would have been:

1. Buck Baker 2.8

2. Max Berrier 6.4

3. Jimmy Vaughn 7.4

4. Jim Paschal 9.0

5. Phil Wills 9.2

6. Tiny Lund 9.4

7. Wayne Andrews 10.2

8. Doug Aldridge 11.4

9. Richard Childress 12.0

10. Ernie Shaw 13.6

FLEMINGTON 100

Flemington Fairgrounds

Flemington New Jersey

Tuesday, July 21, 1970

Grand American race #22 of 1970 was held at the Flemington Fairgrounds Speedway a square shaped mile dirt surface with the corners rounded. It was the fourth of a 5 event STP Northern Tour after a 340 mile trip from Loudon on Sunday. Starting line ups were determined by qualifying heats won by Tiny Lund and Jim Paschal.

Tiny Lund led the first 16 laps while most drivers struggled with mud covering their windshields before yielding to Paschal who stayed out front until lap 51 when he was caught up in a wreck that injured two drivers. The NASCAR Newsletter race result list Stan Starr Sr. was driving the #9 Camaro but news reports of the accident list Stan Starr Jr. as the driver. The #9 Camaro spun out in 3 and 4 and was hit head on by Ken Rush running wide open. Both drivers were hospitalized in serious condition with Starr suffering a broken leg and Rush loosing 12 teeth while breaking his sternum and jaw. Paschal was able to pit under the caution and repair the damage to his Javelin enough to continue. Tom Cox was also involved but was able to continue until a later wreck side lined him that involved Starrs other Camaro driven by Tom Tiller. After the wreck Lund would move into the lead and hold it the rest of the way to record his 15 th win of 1970 with Jim Paschal close behind in second.

Lund earned $1,400 of the $9,030 purse. Of note on the purses for the Tour events was how the funds were distributed. The payout did not drop off as fast as you went down the order. No finisher got less than $200.

Twenty four cars took the green and 10 were running at the finish. There were 3 cautions for 26 laps.

Personal note: Wayne Andrews drove the same 70 Cougar in this event that he used in the Paul Revere 250 at Daytona where it was equipped with lights and a windshield wiper. The lights were removed but the wiper came in handy early in the race when the track was muddy. Wayne flipped on the wiper and it worked keeping the windshield clean.

Thanks Dave, I remember your post and found something when I reviewed it. Your race result reported Tiny Lund as having transmission trouble. The NASCAR Newsletter I found the result in listed Tiny as running at the finish but if the transmission went out he may have run only one lap after Baker took the lead.

Bryar Motorsports Park

Loudon, New Hampshire

Sunday, July 19, 1970

Grand American race #21 of 1970 was held at Bryar Motorsports Park on the 5/8 mile paved triangle part of the racing complex. It was the third of a 5 event STP Northern Tour. Loudon is north of Concord about a 175 mile trip from Milton Vermont. Starting line ups were determined by qualifying heats. 5,500 spectators braved threatening weather but were able to see the race go the full 100 mile distance.

Tiny Lund started second but led the first lap with fourth place starter Jim Paschal leading lap two. Lund would lead lap 3 before Paschal would settle into the front spot thru lap 62. Pole sitter Buck Baker then led one lap with Max Berrier who started 20th moving into first thru lap 81. Lund went back out front on lap 82 and appeared to be headed to another win when he began to slow down and was pasted by Baker with only 4 laps remaining. Lund limped along the closing laps and would end up 4 th while Baker notched his second win of the STP Northern Tour. Max Berrier was a close 2 nd the only other car one the lead lap with Wayne Andrews 3 rd 2 laps back.

Baker earned $1,300 of the $9,205 purse. Of note on the purses for the Tour events was how the funds were distributed. The payout did not drop off as fast as you went down the order. No finisher got less than $200.

Twenty six cars took the green and 13 were running at the finish. There were 3 cautions for 17 laps.

Lund regained the Grand American point lead with his 4 th place finish as Ken Rush fell out just past half way and finished 17 th .
