Centennial 250

Hickory Motor Speedway

Saturday, June 13, 1970

Grand American race #14 of 1970 was the second visit that year to the Hickory Speedway, a .363 mile paved oval with similar results. Tiny Lund started on the pole and led the first 78 laps before Wayne Andrews moved to the front for two laps. Lund went back to the lead until he was passed by Max Berrier who held the top spot for 42 laps. Berrier then pitted and handed the lead back to Lund who pitted giving the lead to Jim Paschal. Paschal led for 17 laps before Lund went back out front for good. Tiny crossed the stripe just a few car lengths ahead of Paschal who was only a few car lengths ahead of Andrews.

8th place finisher Ned Setzer was a regular late model sportsman competitor at Hickory and was driving the Toy Bolton Camaro normally driven by Charlie Blanton.

The victory was worth $1,200 and was the 11th of the year for Lund who had failed to land in victory lane only 3 times that year.

Thoughts and prayers to family and friends. I met Worth at Hillsborough. He enjoyed talking about his family as much as his racing.

Chase, This reporter was a little behind on his facts. Dad had worked at what locals called the "slip factory" until 1969. Reid owned Tie-Rite Neckware Company in Asheboro, North Carolina and he expanded his operation by opening a plant in Siler City which dad managed during the years that he drove for Reid. And yes Dave, it took a lot of Reid's greenbacks. There is a place called Silver City in North Carolina and even today most spell checks will try to auto correct Slier City to Silver City.

The above report on Ken Rush may be in error. A later report states Rush finished 10th in a tight race. The tenth place finish brought him to within 4 points of Tiny in the point standings.

Two days after the race Tiny's wife Wanda gave birth to Christopher DeWayne Lund.

Thanks Chase, I've never seen this article. Reid did get most of the engine parts from Bud but they were provided at a cost. At one point during the 1970 season they had blown so many motors Reid sold a '34 Ford Phaeton to get the money for the next engine.

Chase, I noticed Al Grinnan is not listed in the entry list either. Maybe some more confusion about Virginia drivers?

Diamond State 250 May 31, 1970

While researching the August GA race at Dover I found information contrary to what is reported here. The report I had of the Diamond State 250 agreed with the article Dave posted that listed Sonny Hutchins in a Camaro. An Article I found on he Blue Hen 200 stated Sonny had driven Melvin Joseph's #49 Mustang to a 2nd place finish in the Diamond State 250. That being the case it is possible Al Grinnan was in the Diver's #48 Camaro. I know Sonny did drive the #48 Camaro at Charlotte so I assumed it was that same Camaro at Dover.
