A Wonderful Day at Occoneechee / Orange Speedway Celebration Saturday

General

Dave, It looked like a torsion bar suspension not unlike what you would have seen under the front of some of those famous Petty Plymouths. Sorry I missed you on Saturday, there was a lot going on and I guess our paths never crossed or maybe they did and I just did not know it. I know that Jim Lambert was there but never got a chance to speak to him, saw his Troyer Modified though.

Nov. 11, 1973 Tiny wins Title in fanale

Stock Car Racing History

Tiny Lund won the Buddy Shuman Memorial 276 at Hickory Speedway in convincing style and in doing so scored the Grand National East driving championship for 1973. Lund from Cross, S.C., started on the second row and took the lead from Bobby Isaac on the 113th lap after Bobby Allison had led the first 67 laps. By lap 276 Tiny had lapped the field in the Blanton Racing #55 1973 Camaro. Bobby Isaac finished second followed by Bobby Allison, Buddy Baker and Neil "Soapy" Castles, GNE champion in 1972, in fifth.

A native of Harlan, Iowa, Lund received $10,000 in Winston Cup awards for claiming his fourth national driving title in a six year span. He was also 1968 Grand Touring Champion and won back to back Grand American titles in 1970 and 1971. The 41 year old Lund started 14 of the 15 events on the schedule, winning 5 of them. He recorded 11 top tens with 10 top five finishes to total 1294 points. His money winnings for the year was $18,330. Tiny began big league racing in 1955 and is most well known for his 1963 Daytona 500 win in the Wood Brothers Ford in relief of Marvin Panch. Tiny tallied over 50 (56 if I counted right) Nascar top division wins.

General

Car guys are weird folks, aren't we. Go from: sign that reads Not For Sale, to drive it until it catches fire and burns. LOL

Och Jim, Stepping on my toes. I've got a '65 LTD that sat behind the house for close to 20 years, sat right where Dad parked it. We decided to sell it not long ago but the damage was already done, rust all around the trunk. I turned down several request over the years and now don't get any. Should have stored it or sold it if I wasn't going to drive it.

What were you doing at age 51? Twenty years ago Harry Gant was winning 4 Cup races in a row!

General

I remember that Dad got a Harry Gant T-shirt to wear, think it had his age on it. They ran together in the Late Model Sportsman days and he pulled for Harry in the GN cars.

A few weeks ago I found that my Daughter had a box of 8MM film that my Uncle Tom had taken in the early 50s.

Stock Car Racing History

Wow Jim, I have got to show this to Dad. He told me that he ran a little at Johnson County before he started running late models. It may not be him but he had a '37 Ford 2-door coach just like the blue #4 in the first video clip, it just might be him. Any idea of what year this was?

Think you guys are tired of hearing "He's racing me too hard"? Just wait, you got a taste already, next year it will be "I'm still learning" all day every day.

Very sad news. Last time I saw Ken was at Jim Paschal's visitation. Thoughts and prayers go out to his family.
