The Rumble of Dust

Stock Car Racing History

As I was enjoying the sights and sounds of my youth I moved to a part of the old concrete seats that was in the shade. As I did an elderly gentleman was doing the same and I helped steady him as he moved up a seat. What a blessing, turns out this gentleman's name was Worth McMillion and he is now 93. My first thought was wow what a great name then I learned that he was a veteran of the last battles waged at the old speedway. Someone look this up because I can't remember all that he told me about the races he ran there, he finished 5th or 8th in the last race in 1968. I was amazed as he proudly pointed out his sons and grandchildren and almost brought to tears as he told of the loss of another son in a car wreck and then his wife in the same week. I was then very proud of the fact that the men and women that host this event treated him like the VIP that he truly is. From now on when I see his name in print he will be more than just a number but someone that I now know that made history. Congratulations on a great event that I seem to enjoy more every year.

Jr SUCKS!

General

You may have something there Johnny, It may not be as much fun for him as it used to be, more like just a job now. I noticed a change in the public Jr. as soon as the announcement of the big move was made. His interviews became predictable, no more saying just what was on his mind, all his comments measured and thought out. He may not be as good as Sr. but who was. Still he has already proved he can win. I think it shows how incredibly hard it is to win these days. Once someone wins on a regular basis and then goes without winning we all start to ask whats wrong. That's what everyone was asking this past weekend about the 48 team and they have 5 wins this season. When the good teams win regularly they make it look easy but it is not. For every way that you can find to win a race there are a hundred ways to loose it. Johnny Mallonee said:
The desire is not there now. I dont think he has the say so he wants in his ride and I truly think he misses his own team as he had with DEI . He had family and friends around him close friends, the kind that handled problems. Now Kelley is not running his show and tony jr and senior are not there steering things -----those are things that make or break a driver---- team ---- or organization

My visit with the Legend

General

Tim, I stopped by the museum in Dawsonville one day and was very impressed. I was there by myself but found it to be true to its name. It was about Georgia racers, not just nationally known drivers. The North Carolina Motorsports Hall of Fame could learn a thing or two from them.

Win on Sunday Sell on Monday--remember this???

Current NASCAR

I have heard that the reason that the Camaro was not submitted for approval was the changes that would have been required to get the wind tunnel numbers compariable to the Mustang and Challenger were so significant that GM felt that the identity (the styling that makes you think Camaro the instant that you see it) would have been lost. It was more that just the nose that would need tweaking. That's what I heard anyway. There are several Camaros running in the Continental Tire Challenge Series that are very competative with the Mustangs. I agree that the cars need to look more like what is in the showroom. It would be great to see all these cars racing again, remember the Grand American series?

Too personal? Please let me know what you think.

Tim,I listened to Racer's Reunion Radio for the first time this week and enjoyed it thoroughly. I was at the RR Hall of Fame induction the first time that you talked with Bobby about your past feelings and I think that he received your comments just as they were intended both times, heart felt and honest and taken as a way of showing respect and honor. Some times I think that fans forget that racers are fans too. Bobby even talked about the guys he looked up to. We all tend to take things personnel when it's our guy the comments are about but when viewed in context your comments were not out of line. As long time racers we all came up thinking of all drivers as competition, someone you had to beat to win. Hey, he may be famous but he puts his pants on the same way we do, one leg at a time and if he is always beating our guy then we don't like it. While Dad was still racing Bobby was the competition. I did not like the Big Boys always showing up at our events (Late Model Sportsman or Grand American) and winnig our events and taking our purses. I did not like it when he beat us, I respected him, but did not always like him. I asked Dad one time why it never seemed to bother him and his reply was "To be the best, you have to beat the best". And it was sweet when we did beat them. Bobby has always been a racer, a competitor, and I think he understood your comments completely and even found a little humor in it. He knows how fans are about their guy and how we all are fans of the sport. He is one too. Hey, now that we don't have to beat him to win, I'm a Bobby Allison fan too.

why I post picture and clippings

Harvey,I am thankful that you share your treasures. The names and numbers are different than the ones I watched growing up but they stir similar memories from the 60's. I wish that I would have saved all the racing stuff from the past. Keep them coming, please.

Need your input

General

Thanks for asking for our input. I understand the economics of keeping up rarely visited sites and will continue to support stock car RR what ever you do. I have only visited the dirt racers site once and had never visited the road racing site until today. Man there is some great stuff there! It sure would be a shame to loose it. I hope the post can be transfered to the stock car site if you close it. I have raced on dirt, asphalt and road courses and loved it all. All are different but it is all racing and I like racing. There aint nothing better than out braking someone into a corner or picking up the throttle a little bite quicker or getting your nose under that guy in front of you, especially if it is for first.Dennis Andrews
