Just my thoughts. Don't blame Jeff or Racers Reunion

General

Great read Tim. Jamie deserve that and he did a great job Sunday How ironic is it that he was curbed at Roush and pop's Daytona in the #1 car. We needed this kind of thing to happen with an underdog of sorts taking the "500".I'm with you on the DW deal, he makes me want to throw up. I did not see the broadcast but listened to the race on the radio. DW and Mac said that Nascar's history started in 1980 ? What is that ? Maybe it did start in 80 for DW. After all he did have to start with a clean slate after Petty whipped is ASS for the title in "79".We will see if Nascar pays attention to real factual history. A pothole developed at the other end of the speedway during the 500 in 1978. Babby Allison said that his car was good enough to drive around it and he won. The track was paved before the next 500. The first thing I read about the problem this time was that they have no intention of repaving the track. What a bunch of DUMMIES.

Why are we here?

General

I agree with you to a point but Nascar listened to the teams and drivers around 2000-01 and let them wack out the bodies of the cars and gave them left side offset. Anyone recall how the left front fenders on the Cup and Naitonwide cars were wider than the right ? The noses were shaped like bullets, they allowed the teams to flatten out the right rear quarter panels. The drivers wanted their cars to drive better. At that point the competition started to drop off as eveyrone was fighting a push condition in traffic. The leader in clean air would take off. The sport went from leaning towards mechanical grip towards the aero package.NASCAR went from one extreme to the other with the COT and neither package works. NASCAR's credo has always been to have a level playing field but they need to give the teams and drivers something to sink their teeth into and that is the mechanics of the car. Aero is always going to be an issue but does not have to be predominate in what determines set ups. Aero wars are nothing new in NASCAR as the factories got real radical with it during the late 60's. Once Big Bill saw this he put a stop to it. It would probably be a good guess to say that the Dodge Daytona and the Superbird played a part in his decision.

BREAKING NEWS! MUST READ!

General

Darrell Waltrip is a very intelligent man but is also an employee of FOX Sports. Personally I would rather read his blog than hear him talk. But even he is clueless to think or rather state that restrictor plates are the only way to deal with the cars at Daytona and Talladega. Waltrip recently wrote this in his internet column. Maybe DW is not supposed to rock the boat as he is part of the media.NASCAR does see that fans and drivers have been turned off by their brand in recent years hence the spoiler coming back. They need to finish the job by fixing the front of these cars with the elimination of the splitter and bump stops. There is a real possibility that smaller engines will be used in the near future which could eliminate the plate issue. Fuel injection is coming as well which will also be a better way to control horsepower while still giving throttle responce to the drivers and this can be a step in the right direction.NASCAR does not want someone stinking up their marquee event with a runaway and the plate is the best way to achieve that. Untill the sanctioning body gives the teams and drivers a car they they can work on and really drive we will probably see more of the same at Daytona and Talladega. The Cup Series and Nationwide Series in general has lost it's excitement in recent years for many reasons and the biggest one is how the cars are regulated. If NASCAR wants to go back to it's Root's they have a lot of work to do.

we may need to pass the helment through the stands for the shootout purse

Current NASCAR

This is whats sponsors are for. On top of that this race is really a test session which is not allowed otherwise. One segment of this event being 70 laps is longer than the 150 mile qualifying race that each team will run. I do not feel sorry for any of them except those that are not in the race. The Shoot Out should have all of the teams in it, not just 28.

Chargin' Charlies 429 C.I. Dodge Daytona

Stock Car Racing History

At that time Nascar used math based on maximum vehicle weight measured against engine displacement. The engine limit at that time for all engines was a little over 429 C.I.Here is Tom's remark from Randy Ayer's Modeling Forum. He is one of their moderators. The rules allowed a maximum displacement of 429.9, IIRC. Nichels made sure he got every last bit. In those days the cars had to weigh 9.36 lb. per cubic inch and the displacement painted on the hood couldn't be too low or the car could be declared illegal.

Quite the Guest List

General

What a list. It is doubtful that there has been such a gathering of racing greats before or since. I have a pic of Petty showing Nixon his car. I will find it and post it, heck Ray Lamm probably has it right here.Unbelievable group of Hall of Famers and no AJ who in my opinion is the best race car driver ever.

All Jacked Up…and Standing Tall On MY Soap Box!!!

Uncategorized

My apologies to everyone here. I put up a response to Jeff's post concerning the validity of Richard Petty's career per Jeff Blount. I posted the wrong informantion and deleted the reply. Here are more accurate numbers.145 for Pettys victories were on short tracks. 72 of these were events of at least 300 laps in length and 57 of them were at least 200 laps. 72 long distance short track wins with 55 superspeedway victories equals 127. Still the top spot for all time wins. So he competed against weak fields or in many cases teams and drivers that did not run full schedules. per Mr. Blount. How is it Richard's problem that others did not run full steam for an extended period.? Speaking of thin fields I wonder what AJ Foyt or other drivers would say about Blount's article. A.J. ran with Petty many times and loved it. Some of the best drivers in the history of motor sports have raced with Richard and ran in Nascar's elite series. This is still happening today. You can dissect Petty's career any number of ways and he always comes up first. It is obvious that Richard Petty is possibly the best short track racer of all time. Things like 7 Daytona wins and 7 titles are icing on the cake. This takes nothing away from any driver and many other greats that have cut their teeth on the bull rings all over the country.Nascar has forgotten it's own past as well with the inaugural Hall of Fame Class. Having both Bill France Sr. and Jr in the first class is a slap in the face to racing purists everywhere. To be sure Red Byron or Nascar's first real superstar Herb Thomas should have gotten in. It seems to be a selfish act for those involved to put both France's in at the same time but this is typical of anything Nascar in recent years. It was only a matter of time before some of the older tracks were dropped with Bruton Smith's buy outs that Nascar could not control but what they do control is the product and it is just not that good. The Cup series is over regulated and the Nationwide series is now only a play ground for the big boys to suck up all the bank. The old Sportsman Division used to stand on it's own as a series with some of the best short track drivers in the country hammering away on a weekly basis. Not now.The main stream media is not clueless but are instructed to act that way in order to hype it up but with no real substance it falls down. Early in 2009 the media spoke of Kyle Bush winning 200 races in an indirect reference to Petty's 200 mark but everybody knows what a joke that is. The Hype is not being met with results and excitment. The races are stale. Daytona is nothing like it used to be, heck they cant finish a plate race with out cars tumbling down the track. As much as Nascar and the media tries to kick it up the more stale it gets.Once there was a time ......

Ned Jarrett

Ned is a true gentleman of Nascar and one of the best television commentators I have ever seen. It is people like Ned Jarrett that make Nascar what it is today.
