Richard Petty Motorsports - Back to the future

Current NASCAR

Here's a brief excerpt from an August 2000 article at the site www.greatercharlottebiz.com mentioning the Bahari shop becoming Eel River and pretty much crediting Chuck Rider and Bahari with creating the "Race City" persona for Mooresville, NC .

When I first read your post, it was my sincere hope that our member, Tim Leeming - "The Legend" - had already eaten, so as not to spoil his appetite when he read that RPM was again returning to the site where "you know who" once danced and pranced through the building when it was originally constructed.

I've often wondered if perhaps The Legend was once abducted by space aliens and had his mind wiped of all memory that NASCAR's dancing queen once lived with Richard and Lynda. Amazing how Richard's path continues to cross with that fellow. No cars have ever been built for "Sparkle Pony" in that building have they Chase?

October 20, 1963 - Richard Romps in South Boston

Stock Car Racing History

99-9/10ths percent of the time, the issue number on the Jerry Bushmire-shared article would have meshed perfectly with Richard Petty's winning car number. Not on this date, though.

Baby Rowdy - Baby Driver

Current NASCAR

When I saw the news last week that Kyle Busch and wife were expecting an addition to their family, I got a mental picture of "Baby Rowdy" at an early age strapped into a race car. I also immediately thought of the Simon & Garfunkel song, "Baby Driver" from their late 60's "Bridge Over Troubled Waters" album.

"Scoot down the road, what's my number, wonder how your engines feel?!"

Who knows whether Baby Rowdy will drive one day, but I guess Kyle could bring his wife out at Bristol with baby bump (or baby) and play a little Simon & Garfunkel for his song.

Imagine being a young kid and having an endless supply of M&M's !

North Wilkesboro by drone

Historic Speedways and Ghost Tracks

I see that goofy North Wilkesboro victory lane is still standing - on top of the infield concession stand and restroom. It took forever to get the winning car by elevator to the roof before Winston Kelley would interview the winning driver. For my money, they should have spent that money on a wall between the front straight and pit road. I'm amazed NASCAR didn't force that. The Wilkesboro pits were an unnecessarily unsafe place. The most dangerous pit road in NASCAR up until the track closed.

October 18, 1970 - Old Dominion 500

Stock Car Racing History

The Martinsville Grand American race on Saturday was only 100 laps, not 200 as I stated above.

Iceman's Final Race Sunday @ 'Dega; Terry Labonte Promises No Burnouts

Current NASCAR

It has certainly proved tempting to car owners to have a past champ in oft uncompetitive rides.

I always liked the Kellogg's scheme, too, but I really liked the Piedmont Airlines / Billy Hagan car Terry drove to his first championship in 1984.
