Six Charlotte-area companies have been named to the Better Business Bureaus Dirty Half-Dozen list, an annual compilation of businesses with the most unanswered customer complaints for the first half of the year.

Consumers have filed 6,320 complaints with the bureau so far this year, according to the organizations news release. Here are the companies that made the list:

SpeedTech Auto Racing Schools . Randy Baker , son of NASCAR legend Buck Baker, owns the Concord-based business that offers driving lessons at NASCAR tracks. Six customers complained that SpeedTech sold them a lesson that they never received. When the Observer tried to reach the firm Monday, its number had been disconnected.

Brown VS Myers Behind the scenes

Local and Regional Short Track Racing

Something that is really bothersome is that when the Winston-Salem Journal conducted an on-line poll this week of whether readers thought the penalties levied against Brown and Myers by NASCAR officials were fair or unfair, nearly 58% selected the "I Don't Care" option.

I am "assuming" that what you've written refers to comments made by fans following the pro rasslin' style entertainment put on by Brown & Myers at Bowman-Gray the other Saturday night?

R.I.P. ESPN "THUNDER" Broadcaster Gary Lee

General

If you ever watched any of the ESPN Thursday Night Thunder or Saturday Night Thunder USAC telecasts, you were familiar with broadcaster, Gary Lee. The Indianapolis paper reported his passing in this past Monday's July 14 edition. R.I.P. Gary.

Racing broadcaster Gary Lee, 63, found dead at his home

Curt Cavin, curt.cavin@indystar.com 10:26 p.m. EDT July 14, 2014

Longtime motor sports broadcaster Gary Lee, 63, was found dead in his Indianapolis home today, likely the result of a heart attack, friends said.

Lee, who lived on the citys Eastside, was synonymous with ESPNs early events. He teamed with former driver Larry Rice to broadcast the Thunder short-track series that featured drivers such as a young Jeff Gordon at what was then Indianapolis Raceway Park in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

Larry and Gary were Thunder, said fellow broadcaster Bob Jenkins, who helped start the weekly traveling motor sports show along with Larry Nuber. They got along so well.

They were like brothers, said veteran broadcaster Howdy Bell, who met Lee as an 18-year-old broadcasting hopeful.

Born Gary Hill, Lee attended Howe High School in Indianapolis and Vincennes University. He also worked at WTTV-4.

Lee worked on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Radio Network through the 1990s and owned Whiteland Raceway Park for a time.

Here are a few excerpts from the very first ESPN Thursday Night Thunder telecast with Gary Lee at IRP in 1988. This clip opens with AJ Foyt on the dirt at IRP in 1961. Cool footage.

By the way, Richard Petty Night is mentioned in the Scott Fowler's book, North Carolina Tar Heels: Where Have You Gone? On Richard Petty night, Larry Miller set the single game scoring record for the both the Carolina Cougars and American basketball Association.

How Long Did PDA Last? It Was Involved in 1972 Richard Petty Night in Greensboro

Stock Car Racing History

I had "assumed" that the PDA - Professional Drivers Association - was dead and gone by the end of 1969.

This morning while researching something different, I came across a March 4, 1972 article in The Dispatch of Lexington, NC stating that the Professional Drivers Association and its acting director, John Green was involved in the planning of Richard Petty Night at a Carolina Cougars basketball game in Greensboro, NC.

Heck, maybe the PDA still exists. Who knows?
