Racing History Minute - March 19, 1972

Stock Car Racing History

Those Martinsville doubleheaders were some of the best and most exciting races I've ever seen. Fields full of racers' racers.

Caravans of tour buses came to Martinsville from Canada and upstate New York. The Canadian National Anthem was sung along with The Star Spangled Banner.

I never saw a Cup race at the paperclip that came close to matching the competition and rivalry in those 1970s Late Model Sportsman (pre Busch Series) and Modified (pre Tour) doubleheaders staged by Clay Earles. They were the best.

Sorry for the faded brownie Hawkeye Kodak photos, but you get a little sense of the "old" martinsville. That crowd of 23,000 was huge for a stand alone non-grand national event(s) on a blustry March afternoon.

another great lil track is closing

Stock Car Racing History

There's a story in the Chicago paper about the track. The current owner/operator since 1999 cites negative comments on social media affecting attendance:

Bill, that's too bad. Maybe a saviour will come along. Seems our favorite places keep disappearing.

NOW WHAT HAS TONY STEWART WENT AND DONE NOW

Current NASCAR

Although Gene Haas supposedly has a multi-year Ferrari engine deal for his new Formula One team, I wonder if Ford might be eyeing the Haas American F-1 team as a future partner for Ford power and a return to the world racing stage? The Haas stock car teamtransition to Ford could be the beginning of something bigger for Ford down the way.

We can always look back to 1969 when Richard only stayed with the blue oval for one season as Plymouth agreed to furnish him a winged ride like the Dodge Daytona.
