"Not Easy to Take Out Other Cars," Says Danica

Current NASCAR

Danica Patrick acknowledges she needs to practice taking out other cars. Maybe Tony Stewart can arrange a "take out" race on the Eldora dirt for her to practice.

Danica's 1 regret about bumping Cassill: execution

By STEPHEN HAWKINS
AP Sports Writer

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) -- Danica Patrick has only one regret about purposely bumping Landon Cassill in her last race.

"I still think it was important for me to stand up for myself, and I wouldn't change it," Patrick said Thursday. "I would change my execution of the actual incident. I didn't do a very good job with that, but I guess there's only one way to learn, is to try. It's just not that easy to take someone out."

When Patrick spun Cassill in the NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Kansas two weeks ago, she wrecked her own ride. While Cassil saved his No. 83 car, Patrick slammed hard into the wall and ended her race.

Patrick was on the lead lap early at Kansas when she said Cassill slammed into her on the front straight, and on his radio said, "She was in the way." So when Cassill's car slid in front of her, she decided to nudge him. Both of the cars spun out.

Later on his radio, Cassill said, "Rule No. 1 in stock car racing is learn how to wreck someone without wrecking yourself."

Patrick offered no apology and said there have been no conversations with Cassill since Kansas.

"I left it," she said. "If he wants to talk to me, fine. I don't really have much to say. I think the actions speak louder than the words, to be honest."

While she hopes she "won't have to do much of that anymore," Patrick believes it was an important step in earning respect and moving forward.

After a weekend off, with no Nationwide race and not running the Cup race at Martinsville, Patrick is scheduled to run in both series this week at Texas Motor Speedway.

"I welcome weekends off, they're always nice," she said. "The best thing to move on with news is to start racing again. ... The best thing I can do is just get on the track and get going and make another storyline."

Patrick was in Texas early for several appearances, including talking to about 1,500 elementary school children during an assembly at the track Thursday to recognize those who participated in a "Speeding to Read" educational program.

It was at the fall race in Texas last year when Stewart-Haas Racing unveiled Patrick's limited first-year Sprint Cup schedule. Sunday's race at Texas will be the ninth of her 10 races co-owner Tony Stewart picked for this season in preparation for Patrick going full-time in the Cup next year.

Her best finish in the No. 10 GoDaddy.com Chevrolet was 25th at Chicago. She hasn't finished a race on the lead lap, and was 32nd at Kansas, but the purpose of the season was to get some experience.

"It was great that Tony picked the difficult races, because it got them out of the way, and they also built my confidence up to be honest because some of them went relatively well," Patrick said. "So I think that makes me feel better moving forward into next year, and there will be a lot less stress going back to these places that are sort of daunting and unique, and I'll be better for it."

Tony Gibson will take over as crew chief for Patrick over the last two races this season, at Texas and Phoenix, to get a jump on the 2013 season. They will be working together for the first time Friday for practice and qualifying at Texas, though Gibson has been with Stewart-Haas and around Patrick.

"I feel like he always has listened to me. He's been really respectful and I get along with him great," Patrick said. "He's very smart, and just even the information I got before this weekend started of what to expect with the weekend itself, and the car and the date and the information, he's really sharp.

"I look forward to getting on with our relationship, with the work that we have to do," she said. "Because we have a big job ahead of us, and it's nice to get started now."

Who Can Go Slowest?

Stock Car Racing History

Back in the days when the July 4th race at Daytona was actually held on July 4th... back when it was called the Firecracker 400 and not the Pepsi 400 nor Coke 400... back when Pure was the official gasoline and not Unocal, Union nor Sunoco and back when the Darel racing for Junior Johnson was Dieringer - not Waltrip, ABC Wide World of Sports taped the 1967 Firecracker 400.

This very short 2-3 minute clip of the finish finds Fred Lorenzen explaining to announcer Jim McCay why the lead cars seem to be backing up - setting up for the slingshot... remember that?

Running nose-to-tail in 1967 Fords with two laps to go are Dick Hutcherson in the Bondy Long #29, Cale Yarborough in the Wood Brothers #21 and Darel Dieringer in the Junior Johnson #26.

The color commentator was Fred Lorenzen and that's Chris Economaki in Victory Lane. Dieringer would be released 5 races later by Junior following Martinsville in favor of LeeRoy Yarbrough, a short-lived collaboration that would have earned a Winston Million in 1969 had there been one.

NASCAR Refuses Approval for Driver to Race at Texas

Current NASCAR

It's not often that we hear of NASCAR not permitting a driver to race. I only saw bits and pieces of the Kansas Nationwide race and have no recollection of Nur Ali's problems there.

NASCAR doesn't approve Nur Ali to race at Texas

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) -- Nur Ali was not approved by NASCAR to run the Nationwide Series race this weekend at Texas Motor Speedway.

Ali struggled in his Oct. 20 NASCAR debut at Kansas, where he crashed and finished 33rd in the Nationwide race. He is the first driver of Pakistani descent to compete at NASCAR's national level.

The Fort Worth resident had hoped to drive for Rick Ware Racing in Saturday's race at Texas. But he said NASCAR wants him to gain more experience on smaller tracks before he'll be approved to compete at 1.5-mile Texas.

Ali said he'll enter the Nov. 10 race at Phoenix, which is a 1-mile track.

When Dale Earnhardt's Sponsor Helped Bill Elliott & AJ Foyt

Stock Car Racing History

I thought that the stylized "3" that Richard Childress wanted to carry over from the Ricky Rudd/Piedmont Airlines graphic looked awful on the blue & yellow Wrangler car. It only lasted in 1984.

I reckon that really made Ricky's day. Didn't remember that. Thanks, Jay.

When Dale Earnhardt's Sponsor Helped Bill Elliott & AJ Foyt

When AJ switched from the iconic red & white checkerboard shirts to the "Foyt Orange" pit crew shirts, Wrangler continued to furnish them to AJ at no charge and in return Wrangler patches were displayed on all Foyt crew shirts:

Dennis, I'm not aware of Wrangler ever having made any fire-resistant race uniforms. I believe Dale's uniforms were from Bell when I worked for Wrangler.

I don't know of any Teresa or Kerry Wrangler ads. Ricky Rudd did several in the "Live it to the Limit" campaign for the 1984 season. I believe one was on a jet ski on Lake Norman. Ricky alternated with Wrangler ads featuring Dale in 1984 - the only season Wrangler sponsored two drivers.

The ad below was shot with both Dale and Ricky in New York in December 1983 on Thursday morning before the Winston Cup Awards banquet on Friday night at the Waldorf-Astoria. Dale was mad because Ricky was going to be in the ad with him and showed up at LaGuardia airport with his mustache shaved off. Some later ads for the1984 campaign had an airbrushed mustache added to Dale. Also in the ad below, there are three clothespins on the back of Ricky's shirt making it fit tighter for the photo, since the shirt was too big for him!

When Dale Earnhardt's Sponsor Helped Bill Elliott & AJ Foyt

Stock Car Racing History

Here's one I thought our young Georgia member, Cody Dinsmore might appreciate.

I was just looking through some old business cards and came across one given to me by Steve Shafer, head of Coors Special Events Marketing in 1983 when they first considered coming into NASCAR and hadn't yet announced that they'd be sponsoring a young fellow named Bill Elliott in 1984.

In 1983, I was Manager of Wrangler Jeans NASCAR Special Events and other sponsors often picked my brain for promotional ideas. We also furnished lots of jeans, shirts and jackets to other teams, besides our Dale Earnhardt and Ricky Rudd ones. Back in 1983, you didn't have all the specialized manufacturers that supply NASCAR teams today and fire suits on pit crews were unheard of.

When I flipped over the business card given me by Coors, there on the backside were the items Coors wanted to source for their new NASCAR sponsorship of Harry Melling and Bill Elliott in 1984. Y'all probably never realized that Dale Earnhardt helped Bill Elliott did ya?

I guess the most famous apparel I furnished to other teams were the iconic red & white checkered shirts used by AJ Foyt & Jim Gilmore, both in NASCAR and at Indianapolis. Below the Coors business card, I've possted an AJ shirt... you can see the Wrangler tag in the neck and over the pocket.

NASCAR was a smaller world then.
