What's the Beef at Roush?

Stock Car Racing History

In case you didn't know, Jack Roush is celebrating his 25th year in NASCAR.

The other day when I was watching a telecast I noticed the Ricky Stenhouse #6 Roush car was being sponsored by Cargill Beef:

Jack evidently has a thing for beef. How could we ever forget all the success Mark Martin had for Roush in his Winn-Dixie #60 Busch Series car? That car carried the Winn-Dixie slogan "The Beef People" on it.

But, Jack Roush was late to the NASCAR beef party. In January 1984, Wendy's unveiled its famed "Where's the Beef" ad campaign.

At the time, Rocky Mount, NC-based Hardee's was sponsoring the Harry Ranier #28 driven by Cale Yarborough. Hardee's answered Wendy's question by painting "It's All Here" on the rear of Cale's car. I haven't found a photo, but when Richard beat Cale at Daytona in July 1984 for his 200th win, that saying was on the back of Cale's car.

Anyhow, if any of you have a beef, please take it to Jeff, lol.

No Yellow Flag Back in the Day

Stock Car Racing History

Bill France, Jr. was the "Race Director" in May 1982 at Talladega in those pre-David Hoots days.

No Yellow Flag Back in the Day

Stock Car Racing History

I was looking for a short clip of Dale Earnhardt in the 1982 Wrangler Bud Moore Ford to illustrate a point in another post.

Look at this 3 minute clip from the 1982 Talladega Winston 500. Thirty years ago it took more than a water bottle to bring out a NASCAR yellow flag.

Is That Bud Moore / Earnhardt Car a Ford or a Pontiac? Are You Sure?

We have our own in-house RR personality with Jay!

Good catch, Chase of Jay's great job.

Take a bow, Jay!

I guess there are many reasons, Jay, why the racers have always been so well loved by the rental car companies, lol!

I well remember always going by the Gilbarco plant. Wrangler Aviation was down from the old brick terminal in some steel buildings. Kinda looked like a bunch of thrown togerther WWII stuff.

Dennis, I'm not in the photo. I was in a Sheriff's car with Martha Earnhardt being escorted by motorcycle officers, but got stuck in traffic trying to get her from the Wrangler V.I.P. Suiote outside turn 1 to Victory lane. An awful storm blew up and victory lane was cut short.

It was a "back-up" Osterlund Pontiac off the truck that we used in the pre-race parade that day in Spring 1981 at Atlanta. That's all I remember. Our show car wasn't there. The actual race car that day had white wheels. The car I drove off the truck for the parade had chrome wheels.

Definitely no Ford connection until 1982. Wish I could remember more.

Could it have been the Richmond or Rockingham or Darlington car?? Wish I could remember.
