Ray Lamm's photo of car owner Al Rudd's #90 Truxmore Chevy driven by son Ricky Rudd in 1979 NASCAR race.

Stock Car Racing History

Interesting side note to this race:

David Pearson who hadn't driven at Bristol in 8 years started the #2 Osterlund car in place of spring 1979 Bristol winner, Dale Earnhardt who had broken both collarbones in a crash at the 2nd Pocono race.

However, Pearson (who'd win the Southern 500 at Darlington in the #2 Osterlund car) couldn't go the 500 lap Bristol distance. He was relieved by Lennie Pond. Photographer David Allio has a great photo in his archives of Pond and Pearson getting ready to make the driver exchange in the Osterlund car on pit road at this link: ( See photo posted August 1, 2012 marked Bristol 1979 @ NASCAR)

Even with the driver exchange, the Pond/Pearson tandem in the injured Earnhardt's car finished 7th, two positions ahead of Rudd in the #90, but 1 spot behind 6th finishing Millikan in the LG DeWitt #72.

Stock Car Racing History

I know Ray's original photo post said this was a Richmond photo, but it is definitely the 1979 Bristol night race. That's the old B.I.R. wall signage.

I'd say that looks like it "could" be a Ford Granada body on the #90 Ricky Rudd / Truxmore/ Junie Donlavey entry. I know George Jefferson ran a Granada (had been a Merc Cougar) for his brother Harry Jefferson in Winston West at that time before Derrike Cope started driving for him. Was the Granada legal in Cup? The race results say Ford, but maybe it is an Al Rudd Chevy Monte Carlo painted in Junie's livery.

And I believe the #72 on the outside is the L.G. DeWitt / Joe Millikan car. Race results say Chevy, but it sure looks like the Olds 442 LG used to run to me.

Now, which of you real car folks knows the real answers?

Old Fashioned - Hamlin / Girlfriend / Baby

Current NASCAR

I, too, was left scratching my head over the statement.

Old Fashioned - Hamlin / Girlfriend / Baby

Current NASCAR

One of my grandsons and I both pull for the driver from my hometown who has been stellar at Pocono. However, I didn't care for the quote I read today. I guess it is a different time and place.

Never thought I'd be called old fashioned, but I guess I have gotten that way.

Joe Gibbs must be freaking out right about now.

Tell Us What You Really Think About NASCAR & Indy, AJ (Foyt)!

Current NASCAR

Yep, Chase... I'll take the old AJ any day over the purple cushions:

Side note: AJ came to us early in 1981 at Wrangler and asked if we could make a red & white checkered western shirt. From that day on, all of the Foyt crew shirts at Indy and for NASCAR were shipped out of my Wrangler office in Greensboro. His secretary, Sherry, at his Chevy dealership in Houston coordinated everything with size lists, etc. and was a real sweetheart.

And, in the first 1983 UNO Twin 125 Qualifier for the Daytona 500, Dale Earnhardt in Bud Moore's T-bird set up AJ perfectly on the last lap to slingshot by for the win, pushed by Buddy Baker in the Wood Brothers T-bird. When it was all done, AJ had slipped to 4th after a very aggressive move by Kyle Petty. If you've never seen the video, you'll enjoy seeing KP lean on AJ through turn 4. Kyle's interview answer regarding whether he looked over at AJ is classic. Look how young Kyle and his crew chief, Mike Beam are!

After all was said and done, AJ came over to the Bud Moore hauler and allowed to Dale as to how he had been perfectly set up. Memories.

Tell Us What You Really Think About NASCAR & Indy, AJ (Foyt)!

Current NASCAR

From a recent Indianapolis Star article, the never shy AJ Foyt offered a quick, concise thought on NASCAR at Indy and NASCAR in general:

People like to see racing, as long as its good racing, and the Brickyard has never been very good, said A.J. Foyt, the first four-time winner of the Indianapolis 500 who also qualified for the inaugural Brickyard 400 in 1994.

All in all, NASCAR doesnt have good racing any more. You watch the last 10 laps. Thats about it.

What Bill France Said 57 Years Ago Today - August 3, 1955

Stock Car Racing History

You are indeed correct that the Lemans episode cast a huge cloud over auto racing. In addition to the LeMans horror, there were a number of high profile open wheel deaths at AAA events in 1955, including fan favorite Bill Vukovich at Indy.

What Bill France Said 57 Years Ago Today - August 3, 1955

Stock Car Racing History

On August 3, 1955, AAA announced they would no longer sanction auto racing following many high profile, deadly accidents during the 1955 racing season.

Asked to comment on the AAA announcement, here is what NASCAR's Bill France had to say,

"Automobile racing is here to stay like sex, the atom bomb, and ice cream."

Ironic that 50 years later AAA was sponsoring a car in France's racing series as well as a race at his family's California track in Fontana.
