WHAT IS THIS ALL ABOUT?

General

Lucky for me that George Herbert Walker Bush and wife dropped the Herbert when they named "W" or I might not know who we're talking about!

Well, just don't get my ole brain confused when you start calling Dale, Jr. "Dale." What are you gonna call his dad now to keep from confusing me?

I think it will be very confusing to call him just plain Dale. He is Dale, Jr. and that's what I'll keep calling him, thank you mam.

Kinda like nobody ever called Ralph Dale Earnhardt "Ralph."

WHAT IS THIS ALL ABOUT?

Last October, our RR member, Jim Streeter posted wonderful mid-1950s 8mm race footage of himself, Winding Wayne Andrews and Farmer John Matthews racing at the Johnson County, NC racetrack owned by Percy Flowers.

Percy Flowers at the time was the biggest moonshiner in the United States of America as profiled in the Saturday Evening Post .

Look at what folks are able to do with that moonshine money when they invest it in "legitimate" enterprise. Much of bootlegger and race track operator, Percy Flower's old eastern North Carolina Johnson County moonshine stomping ground has been turned into one of the most exclusive planned "bedroom" communities in the Raleigh, NC area - Flowers Plantation .

Here is the link to the place and if you click on the about/history you'll see a photo of the country store where Percy first started selling his distilled wares. Moonshine pays well!

No Lucky Dogs, Just Ugly Dogs in Sonoma!

General

As luck would have it, the Sonoma - Marin County Fair will be taking place in nearby Petaluma ( home of one of the world's great Italian restaurants and setting for the movie, American Graffitti ) at the same time as the activities at the race track once known as Sears Point and Infineon and currently called Sonoma. The fair is celebrating the 75th Anniversary of the Golden Gate Bridge (beware if Bruton Smith tries to sell you a bridge this weekend) .

Graziano's - One of the great restaurants on the NASCAR circuit -

Not to be outdone by that stupid "Lucky Dog" rule over at the racetrack, the Fair has reprised it's Ugliest Dog contest. The dog contest might be more interesting than the race on Bruton's watered down version of the once really neat and challenging road course.

Icky, a Chinese Crested owned by Jon Adler of of Davis, CA, competes in the pedigree class at the 23rd annual World's Ugliest Dog Contest at the Sonoma-Marin Fair in Petaluma on Friday night June 24, 2011. Stay tuned for mugs of this year's ugly competitors, to be posted shortly after the competition on Friday, June 22, 2012.

Dale Junior's Scary Sonoma Moment was 8 Years Ago

Stock Car Racing History

Hard to believe it's been 8 years since Dale Earnhardt, Junior's practice crash in an American LeMans Series car at Sonoma in 2004 resulted in that scary fire. If you remember, the young Earnhardt later said he felt like his late Dad had helped him exit that burning race car.

Something that strikes a chord in the replay interview with Chevy's racing honcho is his assertion that fuel cells don't like ethanol. Hope our NASCAR teams keep a close eye on those things and swap the innards out at appropriate intervals.

Keep Yer Stinkin' Trucks & Buses Outta Kentucky Says State Police; We Got Race Traffic to Deal With

Current NASCAR

Don't guess the truck stop in Sparta will be too busy, but maybe it's just as well... considering how they drive at that particular truck stop!
