In Your Opinion....The Best Looking Paint Scheme From the 80's

Stock Car Racing History

We also talked International Speedway Corporation into depicting that car on the pole for the 1981 Daytona 500 and 1981 Busch Clash program cover. As the late John Lennon once said, "The Great Griff Moves in Mysterious Ways His Wordwork to Perform!" Actually, Pontiac called the shot on that happening.

This is the photo of the 1981 Wrangler Osterlund Pontiac #2 with Dale Earnhardt at speed at Riverside that ISC had blown up and hung in the entrance to the Talladega offices and International Motorsports Hall of Fame. We later thinned out the number and sponsor name with a black outline.

Best driving car I ever owned was a metallic royal blue 1973 Monte Carlo 350 with black top that I had all the pollution equipment removed from by a drag racer in Wilson, NC (who also did the state inspections on the vehicle).

In Your Opinion....The Best Looking Paint Scheme From the 80's

In his "Publisher's Corner" column of National Speed Sport News following the 1981 Daytona 500, the venerable Chris Economaki said the 1981 #2 Wrangler Jeans Osterlund Pontiac driven by Dale Earnhardt was the best looking stock car he had ever seen.

Who am I to argue with Chris?! I agree.

They hung a near life sized shot of that car at speed at Riverside in the main entrance to the Talladega office complex and International Motorsports Hall of Fame.

Why You Don't Let Non-Racers on Racetracks - 2 Dead at CMS, Another Critical After Vietnam Vets Crash

General

Back when I worked at the Richmond track, we used to catch a lot of flack because we didn't let folks drive on the racetrack. It invariably leads to bad situations, no matter how "controlled" you think things are. What happened Saturday at Charlotte Motor Speedway is prime evidence of why you don't do it.

The lawsuits will be coming forthwith... and, they're supposed to host 100,000 Democratic National Convention guests in that infield on Labor Day. Bet the DNC reconsiders.

2 die in motorcycle wreck at speedway after party for vets

Two people died and one remained in critical condition late Sunday following a motorcycle wreck Saturday at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

About 5 p.m., shortly after the day-long Vietnam Veterans Homecoming Celebration in Concord ended, two motorcycles crashed into each other on the speedways track, Concord police said.

Three people were hurt in the collision, and all were rushed to area hospitals.

Both drivers died a short time later, police said, and the third person remained hospitalized, police said.

Concord police have not released the names of the three victims, although they said that none of them are from the Charlotte area.

Adrian Parker, director of communications for the speedway, declined to release details of how the collision happened, saying that was part of the Concord police investigation. He also wouldnt say whether the speedway would review its safety procedures or how it would plan to prevent similar incidents from happening in the future.

A lot of that stuff will be after the investigation, he said.

It was unclear when the investigation would be completed.

Shawn Lane, of Willow Spring, rode his motorcycle in the event and said he observed activity he described as dangerous going on all day.

Lane, 46, who said hes been riding motorcycles for three decades, said he didnt see the collision or know the people involved

But he said some of the riders took unnecessary risks, riding along a steep, banked turn near the speedways large high-definition television screen. Others didnt wear helmets.

And at times, Lane said, it was difficult to navigate two-way traffic along the speedway, which doesnt have lane markings.

So many folks who had never been on the track before took the liberty of driving around the track, and its very steep in the curve, he said.

It was some poor judgment. We saw some guy up on the side of the track with no helmet, going along. You hate to judge or be critical of anything, but Im surprised the track let it go on that long.

The deaths were a sad end to a day that attracted some 62,500 people, including vets, their families, members of dozens of advocacy groups and others who just wanted to say thanks.

The free event was sponsored by the USO of North Carolina, the N.C. Association of Broadcasters and the Speedway.

A spokeswoman for the USO, Debby Robinson, referred questions to the speedway. Martha Quillian of the (Raleigh) News & Observer contributed

Final Riverside Race Almost Had Car Hit Spectators

Historic Speedways and Ghost Tracks

Soft walls... hard walls... tire barriers... catch fences...

I did not remember this crash, but in the very final Riverside race in 1988, Winston West regular Ruben Garcia almost landed in the crowd.

OMG - The Sky is Falling! (or What is that coming out of that helicopter?)

Local and Regional Short Track Racing

The new ownership at the revamped Southern National Motorsports Park seems to be promotion minded.

Not to be outdone by Henny Penny who screamed the "Sky is Falling!" - this group will attempt to drop "1000s" of Easter Eggs from a helicopter on April 7.

Wonder if any of that group is old enough to remember the WKRP in Cincinnati episode when newsman Les Nessman dropped turkeys from a helicopter over a shopping center as a Thanksgiving promotion? Poor Les and the station owner didn't realize turkeys couldn't fly.

At least the track isn't dropping bunnies and they are getting publicity!

Simple As Impactful As Fancy NASCAR Marketing Says Leonard; Wood Bros. Practice What They Preach

General

Simple is just as impactful as fancy NASCAR marketing says Leonard Wood. Who's to argue with the effect he and brother Glen have in sharing goodness with local citizens?

Opinion: Wood brothers grant wish

By CHRIS PRIDE - Martinsville Bulletin Sports Writer

There are many ways we can change peoples lives or at least bring on a smile. Sometimes the easiest way to do that is simply spending time with them.

Thats what the Wood brothers, Stuart and Patrick County natives, did Wednesday afternoon. In conjunction with the Blue Ridge Rehab Center (BRRC), racing legends Glen and Leonard Wood made an appearance for a few hours at the Blue Ridge Village to honor a request for one of racings biggest fans.

Carol Wood, daughter in-law to Glen, and BRRC marketing director Tilisa Riddle arranged a special meeting for one BRRCs patients, Charles Leftwitch. The normally talkative race car aficionado was rendered speechless at the arrival of one of NASCARs biggest names. It was something that executive director Chris Oswald said left a lasting impression.

To bring in the Wood brothers who are local legends and mix it with Charles passion for racing was just a phenomenal experience, Oswald said. You could just see in his eyes that this was probably one of the best days of his life.

As NASCAR continues to find ways to become more marketable, Leonard Wood noted that simple things, such as making visits like this one, has just as much of an impact.

Its very rewarding that were in a position to come in and brighten up somebodys day, he said. To see the look on their face, theyre so happy to get an autograph; its so rewarding to us. It feels good to know that were healthy enough to do this sort of thing and to do something to make someones life a little bit better.

The Wood brothers began their visit with a trip to Leftwitchs room, which contains a variety of collectibles and posters from some of his favorite racers. A longtime Earnhardt fan, Leftwitchs prized piece is a Dale Earnhardt Sr. cutout that stands in the corner of his room. The Woods presented him with a personal Wood Brothers Racing button to add to his stash. Leftwitch had gathered most of his valuables with money from collecting and recycling cans.

After visiting personally with Leftwitch, the brothers spent the next hour or so downstairs signing autographs and taking pictures with many others in the rehab center who wanted to see the local racing pioneers.

Martinsville is a race town and most of the guys that have been in this sport for years are home grown, Oswald said. Our residents were so proud to have the Wood brothers autographs and some even had loose leaf books signed specifically for them. The Wood brothers are like celebrities to these folks.

Wood Brothers Racing will not be featured this weekend with its No. 21 car driven by up-and-coming youngster Trevor Bayne. The youngest driver in the Wood Brothers history won the 2011 Daytona 500, the first win for the company in 10 years. With over six decades of racing, WBR holds the longest association with a manufacturer, Ford, and has won at least one race in every one of those decades. With 98 total victories, Leonard acknowledged how privileged he is to be associated with so many great drivers in his time.

Weve had 75 drivers over our time, so you can imagine all the types weve dealt with, Leonard said. Theres always something unique in how you set up the car for each one. Trevor is a great young kid, and weve been so fortunate over the years to have so many great drivers race our cars.

Recently, Glen was inducted into the 2012 class of the NASCAR Hall of Fame with the help of his brother.

It was a great experience, and I hope (Leonard) gets nominated next year because hes a big part of why Im here, Glen said. I guess Im also part of the reason why hes nominated to go in, too. Its been an up-and-down roller coaster over 62 years.

Glen and I have always worked well together, made decisions together, discussed strategy, and weve just supported each other throughout, Leonard added.

While racing has certainly changed from the time they began, one mentality has stayed the same: winning.

The bottom line, whether it was the first race we ever did, its about winning races, Leonard said. To win then was very exciting just as it was last year at Daytona.

With this weekends Sprint Cup race at Martinsville approaching, Leonard looks forward to watching the race. He has plenty of history and knowledge of the Martinsville track and enjoys the different facets of racing that the track demands.

At Martinsville you use a different strategy all together, said Leonard. It works the breaks, acceleration, the traction and runs very different than any other race track. You really need to know how to use your brakes.

Thanks, Legend, for the Look into the Earnhardt Family Photo Album

Stock Car Racing History

I missed the Tuesday night Goat Rodeo broadcast this week, but I was anxious to see what words of wisdom Tim Leeming, The Legend had imparted in his weekly "Legendtorial."

That weekly missive is always posted on the home page at www.racersreunion.com .

As always, I enjoyed it and the content led me to take a look at NASCAR.com where I literally stumbled across something I hadn't previously seen, but had been there for over a year.

In February 2011 on the 10th Anniversary of her father's death, Kelley Earnhardt posted a 9 minute video looking at some intimate Dale Earnhardt family photos, along with her narration. It is the kind of stuff that will bring a tear to your eye and I so remember most of the Wrangler oriented shots.

If not for searching for Tim's editorial column of the air, I'd never have seen this wonderful piece. So, thank you, Tim for your Legendtorial and for leading me to this link:
