No Bones About It - Daytona is Reaching

General

I am definitely getting left in the dust. I don't know what Cloud technology is, but Daytona announced yesterday they are using it (head in the clouds, maybe? ) to keep folks informed.

Now comes another Daytona announcement of earth shattering proportions. I gotta buy a program to keep up with all the honorary officials. These are new titles for me. There seem to be more than there used to be.

UFC Superstar Jon Bones Jones Named Honorary Race Official For The 54th Annual Daytona 500

2/20/2012
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. UFC Light Heavyweight champion Jon Bones Jones will serve as Honorary Race Official for the 54th annual Daytona 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race on Sunday, Feb. 26 at Daytona International Speedway (FOX, 1 p.m. ET).

As Honorary Race Official, Jones will be introduced at the drivers meeting, participate in pre-race ceremonies and ride in one of the honorary race official cars ahead of the 43-car field for the 200-lap, 500-mile historic race.

Jon Bones Jones is a huge star in mixed martial arts, Daytona International Speedway President Joie Chitwood III said. We are excited to welcome him to the World Center of Racing and have him be a part of the pre-race ceremonies for NASCARs biggest, richest and most prestigious race.

I am thrilled to be able to serve as Honorary Race Official at this year's Daytona 500, NASCAR's premier event, Jones said. Like the UFC, NASCAR has a passionate and knowledgeable fan base, and I am honored that I will get to share this experience with them."

Jones holds a career record of 15-1, which is comprised of eight knockouts and five submissions. He was named Most Dangerous Man at the 2011 Spike Guys Choice Awards and 2011 Fighter of the Year at the World MMA Awards.

In December 2011, the Endicott, N.Y. native capped off what many have hailed as the greatest year in MMA history with a submission against Lyoto Machida.

Earlier in the year, Jones became the youngest champion in UFC history at the age of 23 after he won all four of his fights and earned the Light Heavyweight title. With two more defeats of former champions later in 2011, Jones became the first fighter in UFC history to defeat three former champions in one year.

Jones entered the UFC in August 2008 after only four months of competing in professional fights.

Currently, Jones trains in Albuquerque, N.M. under legendary MMA coach Greg Jackson. On April 21 in Atlanta, Jones will take on his former champion training partner, Suga Rashad Evans, in one of the most anticipated UFC fights of the year.

Considering how many things I ever got drivers to autograph for sick kids and benefits, it may seem strange that I own no driver autographs. I will say that both NASCAR and the tracks considered it very bad form for people working in racing, including credentialed media members to ask for driver autographs for personal use or collection.

In fact, we attempted to diligently prevent the practice of drivers being bothered like this by those "working" in the business. I'm not talking about fans. I'm talking writers, photographers, broadcasters, crew, sponsors with track and NASCAR credentials.

There was a deceased owner of a publication who was probably the worst offender I encountered. He was eventually denied credentials by most tracks. This person used to carry a shoulder satchel and fill it with all the press kits he could steal from an infield media center, then sell the photos and hero cards inside.

He ruined it for a lot of legitimate small publications trying to get track credentials. As I've stated before, the only racing photo I have on display is one of my late dad posed next to a Bud Moore/Dale Earnhardt T-bird. When I got home, I didn't want to look at racing pictures.

The best way for a sponsor who knew what they were doing to distribute photos was to mail the photos and transparencies directly to newspaper photo editors with appropriate dated cut lines before the season began. It used to kill U.S. Tobacco that so many newspaper shots of Harry Gant in photos accompanying stories were not Skoal photos, but Detroit Gasket photos. That's because I repped that associate sponsor and had my photos with all the photo editors at the major papers and wire services. The late Joe Whitlock taught me that practice.

I do own one autograph I obtained as a boy in 1958. It is the autograph of the late Jim Arness, Television's "Matt Dillon" on Gunsmoke. I obtained it in person when my dad's company in Richmond, Liggett & Myers Tobacco Co. brought Jim to Richmond. Their L&M brand sponsored the show.

He served as Grand Marshal of the National Tobacco Festival and its Grand Illuminated Tobacco Festival Parade and Tobacco Bowl Football Game between VPI & West Virginia. Let me tell you, Jim Arness was a very BIG man. I daresay he was the most popular Grand Marshal, also, in the history of the Southern 500 at Darlington.

Yep, Dale usually just signed his name, at least in the Wrangler days when I was around him.

Grand Jury Felony Indictments for Jeremy Mayfield

General

Jeremy Mayfield indicted on charges of possessing stolen goods

WSOC-TV Charlotte, NC

A grand jury indicted former NASCAR driver Jeremy Mayfield on Monday for allegedly having stolen property.

Mayfield was indicted on counts of possession of stolen goods and obtaining property by false pretenses.

In November, Mayfield was arrested and charged with possessing methamphetamine. Deputies went to Mayfield's home in the town of Catawba with a search warrant after getting a tip that there were stolen goods on the property, officials said.

During the search, deputies said they found a small amount of methamphetamine.

Some furniture was seized by investigators in Hudson after trailers filled with 70 items were stolen from a company last February. According to search warrants that Channel 9 obtained, Mayfield and another man were spotted in the businesss parking lot the night of the theft.

We were overwhelmed by how much stuff was down there, Catawba County Sheriff Coy Reid said.

For the first time Monday, deputies talked about a possible motive behind allegedly having the stolen property.

You have a lifestyle that he was used to living and he had to keep up that lifestyle, Reid said.

People in the town of Catawba were talking about the indictments on Monday.

I feel bad for him, area resident Rachel Harp said. Everyone makes bad choices. You just have to live with them and the consequences that come with them.

(I) hate to see him lose all that, you know, and go down like it did, Taft Allison said.

HAVE YOU NOTICED?

Current NASCAR

Decided the swimsuit photos I had posted weren't in the best of taste and deleted them, FYI.

But they did get me to wondering....

If the NASCAR doctor giving the Daytona 500 physicals discovers a Confederate flag tattoo, will the driver be banned from the race?
