Euro Racecar Series gets Touring status

The Euro Racecar Series has been granted NASCAR Touring Series status, making it the official 'feeder series' for European stock car drivers aiming for Sprint Cup and Nationwide.
NASCAR announced this week that it had granted NASCAR Touring Series status to the Euro Racecar Series, putting it alongside similar regional championships in the US, Canada and Mexico.

The new partnership means that Euro Racecar will be the officially sanctioned way in for European drivers to graduate on to NASCAR's three US-based national championships - Sprint Cup, Nationwide and Camping World Truck Series.

"Obviously, this is great news for everyone involved in Euro Racecar," said Jrome Galpin, who was the creator of the series that began in 2009 and is currently run by Team FJ with the support of the French Federation (FFSA).

"Joining NASCAR means entering a great family were key words are passion, professionalism and commitment," continued Galpin. "Beyond the recognition, this agreement is a fantastic boost for our series to become one of the main motor sport series in Europe."

Under the long-term deal between the series and NASCAR, Team FJ will remain the exclusive managers and Euro Racecar will continue to also be registered as an FIA International Series.

"We are proud to welcome Euro Racecar to our family," said George Silbermann, NASCAR's Vice President for Regional and Touring Series. "Fans can enjoy the excitement of great stock car racing in locations across the Europe, while talented drivers take the important first step on NASCAR's ladder system."

The partnership will see NASCAR contribute its knowledge and expertise to develop the series in Europe and in creating high-profile sporting events. Euro Racecar was inspired from the start by the NASCAR model and races with tubular chassis cars powered by American V8s.

The first Euro Racecar event of the 2012 season is at Nogaro in France on April 7-8. The series also joins the DTM race weekend at Brands Hatch on May 19-20 before further events at Spa in Belgium, the Tours Speedway in France, and Valencia in Spain before wrapping up in Le Mans in October followed by a non-championship event at Daytona in Florida, US in November.

The Euro Racecar Champion, as well as the runner-up and third-place finisher, will be honoured at the 2012 NASCAR Night of Champions Touring Series Awards Gala in December.

All Good Eatin' Roads Lead to Shelby

General

As you head to Shelby, NC and the Historic Cleveland County Fairgrounds Speedway for the various upcoming events such as the Vintage Championship Series and Good Old Days Series, you needn't arrive hungry.

That's because the North Carolina Barbecue Society Historic Barbecue Trail runs smack dab through Shelby. Barbecue had its origins here in North Carolina, the "Cradle of Cue" and to that end, the Society recognizes outstanding and historic cue joints.

Barbecue Trail

NCBS has designed a barbecue trail from Eastern North Carolina to Tennessee. The trail will meander across the state with stops at 24 NCBS Historic Barbecue Pits. These pits were carefully and selectively chosen by the NCBS board as representatives of the distinctive methods and barbecue cooking styles that have made North Carolina the Barbecue Capital of the World. Each NCBS Historic Barbecue Pit still cooks the old fashioned pit cooked method. And each NCBS Historic Barbecue Pit will proudly display a specially designed emblem depicting old style barbecue cooking that is part of the tradition, heritage and culture that NCBS seeks to preserve.
Criteria for selection to the NCBS Historic Barbecue Trail included, among other things, that the NCBS Historic Barbecue Pit cook their meat product on pits fueled by wood or charcoal, make their own sauce, that the pit had operated continuously for fifteen or more years, that the end product was a good offering and representative of North Carolina Barbecue and that the pit had earned and enjoyed the high esteem of its community, the barbecue industry and barbecue aficionados. The board decided to only include pits that provide a sit down dining experience for the public and to limit the number of pits on the trail to two per town/city.

The establishment of the NCBS Historic Barbecue Trail will afford visitors to the Old North State an opportunity to sample North Carolina barbecue cooked in the traditional fashion and served by some of the nicest people one could ever hope to meet.

Young Lady ARCA Driver Discovers Money Grows on Trees and Leads to Daytona

General

The title of a famous Curtis Turner biography is "Timber on the Moon." If a book is written about young Sloan Henderson, the title could be "Timber in the Backyard ."

Here's her interesting story of getting to Daytona.

19 year old Sloan Henderson in Daytona's ARCA Garage

Some of the 150 year old walnut trees Sloan cut to raise money for Daytona outing

Just a few weeks before Sloan Henderson was set to qualify for last year's Lucas Oil Slick Mist 200 ARCA race at Daytona International Speedway, she received news the financial backing from her sponsorships had fallen through.

Unable to come up with several thousand dollars on her own, she returned to her home in Dayton, Ohio, wondering if she would ever race again.

"It was a huge downer," said the 19-year-old, who will practice today and attempt to qualify Friday for the 2012 Slick Mist 200. "We have constantly heard 'no' from companies and last year when it seemed like my dreams were coming true, it was taken away from me a few weeks before the race was suppose to happen."

But this year, Henderson discovered money does grow on trees.

After hunting on her grandparent's property in Ohio, Sloan's sponsor Terry Wells suggested cutting down 55 walnut trees and selling them to a local lumber mill. For days Sloan, her father Steve Henderson and Wells cut down the 100-foot trees with a 30-pound chainsaw and moved them despite freezing temperatures and snow.

"The trees are 150 years old, so we aren't going to have a chance like this in another 150 years," Steve said.

The timber brought in $23,500 toward Sloan's fundraising goal of $65,000. But if she was going to make it to the first ACRA race of the season and gain the attention of the media and potential sponsors, timber alone wouldn't cut it.

To raise additional funds, Sloan called on the help of her fans with Sloan's Crusaders. Through her website, sloanhenderson.com, fans can become sponsors for as little as $1 and have their name placed on her No. 29 Dodge Charger. So far, Sloan's Crusaders has helped raised more than $30,000. "We are looking for grass-roots sponsors instead of corporations," Steve said. "It's a fan-funded sports car."

Steve Henderson also sold six acres of his family's 30-acre farm to pay for the car and crew for Saturday's race -- the engine alone costs $20,000, he said.

Sloan Henderson started racing at the age of 12 after an accident on her horse, Rocky, left her with a broken jaw. Her father said he was looking for a hobby for his daughter that didn't involve an animal with a "mind of its own."

A former tractor-trailer driver, he remembered how his daughter liked to spend hours turning doughnuts on a four-wheeler when she was a child, and thought racing would be a sport she could excel at. Sloan would eventually go on to break track records at the Columbus Motor Speedway in Columbus, Ohio, and win the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Rookie of the Year Award for Ohio in 2009.

Despite her love for racing, the financial setback in 2011 had Sloan beginning to picture her life without the sport.

"We were literally done racing until three months ago," said Steve. "We were starting to plan our lives outside racing, when she spent a semester in college and then came back and we decided to give it another shot."

About that time, Sloan reached out to Sprint Cup Series driver Brian Keselowski, who was billed as an underdog when he qualified for the Daytona 500 in 2011. He also owns the newly formed Brian Keselowski Motorsports team and was looking for a driver for this year's ARCA series. In December, Sloan tested with Keselowski's team at Daytona International Speedway and finished eighth out of 53 drivers, with an average speed of 181mph. Her results showed promise, as Sloan has never competed in a race with speeds more than 90 mph.

"She jumped in and drove like she had been doing it for 100 years," Keselowski said.

Sloan's fundraising efforts have brought her to Daytona, but without additional sponsorships it's unlikely that she will compete in other ARCA-series races this year.

Like many other drivers before, her performance in the Slick Mist 200 could make or break her career.

"It's Cinderella's shot at the ball," Steve said.

Sloan is one of three female drivers who will attempt to qualify and compete in Saturday's race. And though her long blonde hair will likely help her marketability, Sloan said she hopes her Christian faith and racing talent will set her apart from other drivers.

"I don't want to push Christianity on anyone, I just want to stand up for the things that I believe in," she said. "I believe that this is where God wants me to be and he wants me to be an example for others," she said.

Steve Henderson acknowledged that it will be tough for his daughter to beat seven-time Slick Mist 200 winner Bobby Gerhart, but he has faith that Sloan will succeed. He pointed to NASCAR driver Danica Patrick, who placed sixth in the same race in 2010 and has become one of the most high-profile women in auto racing.

"Sloan doesn't have to win," he said. "If she can do one spot better than what Danica did, I think that's going to be press worthy."

Good News - Ray Evernham Back in ESPN Booth

General

Feb 15, 3:50 PM EST

Evernham returns as ESPN analyst after year off

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) -- Ray Evernham is returning to the broadcast booth in NASCAR, rejoining ESPN as an analyst after taking a year off.

Evernham, who won three championships as Jeff Gordon's crew chief and later started his own team, was an ESPN analyst from 2008-10. He didn't work for the network last season, instead becoming a consultant to NASCAR team owner Rick Hendrick.

"I chose to take a year off from ESPN out of respect for ESPN and Hendrick Motorsports," Evernham said in a statement. "I didn't want to create any perceived conflict of interest while I got my bearings at Hendrick and didn't want to cause distraction to either company."

Evernham will continue working with Hendrick while commentating for ESPN. He said his work with Hendrick's companies wasn't related to racing, and he doesn't believe it will create any issues.

"Now that I'm settled at Hendrick Performance, I don't have any involvement on the racing side of the operations and it frees me from any conflict with NASCAR teams," he said. "Mr. Hendrick and I have worked out an agreement that allows me to return to the ESPN team."

Evernham will rejoin ESPN at Daytona Speedweeks.

"I really enjoy the team camaraderie at ESPN and I'm very much at home with this group from my previous three years," he said. "Stock car racing is my passion and I'm looking forward to being back involved."

Richard Petty to be honorary chairman at Chiquita Classic

PGA News Release

Feb. 15, 2012

CHARLOTTE, NC -- Officials of the Chiquita Classic announced that NASCAR legend and Hall of Famer Richard Petty will serve as the Honorary Chairman for the third edition of the Nationwide Tour event that is scheduled for Sept. 24-30 at The Club at Longview in Greater Charlotte, N.C.

"We are honored to join forces with NASCAR legend Richard Petty to raise thousands of dollars for Charlotte area charities," said Fernando Aguirre, Chiquita Chairman and CEO. "When seeking an honorary chairman for the Chiquita Classic, we quickly learned there was no one better than The King himself given his long commitment to charitable causes such as the Victory Junction."

The honorary chairman serves as an important symbol for the Tournament's charitable efforts as the Chiquita Classic raises thousands of dollars for local charities through its charity ticket program and other philanthropic initiatives. Petty exemplifies this as charity and community are deeply engrained within the Petty family and Richard Petty Motorsports. Through the Petty Family Foundation, the family's legacy of success and vision of humanity is carried out.

"Chiquita's commitment to giving back to the local community is something that really impressed me and I am thrilled to be the Honorary Chairman of the Chiquita Classic," stated Petty. "The chance to highlight North Carolina and the Charlotte area, hometown to so many of the individuals and families that are involved in NASCAR, to national and international audiences is a great opportunity. Like the Chiquita organization, Charlotte and its suburbs are full of wonderful people who are very involved in and proud of their communities and I am certain the Chiquita Classic will be a wonderful event."

Known to many simply as "The King," Richard Petty is the most decorated driver in the history of NASCAR racing, winning a record 200 career races and seven NASCAR Cup championships during his illustrious career. After 1,184 races that spanned three decades, "The King" is far from retired. Today Petty is as busy as ever, and spends much of his time overseeing the operations of Richard Petty Motorsports. He has also been elected to the National Motorsports Press Association Hall of Fame, International Motorsports Hall of Fame, North Carolina Auto Racing Hall of Fame, and also the North Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame. He also serves as Chairman of the North Carolina Motorsports Association.

"We are really excited to welcome an icon such as Richard Petty to the Nationwide Tour and the Chiquita Classic," said Nationwide Tour president Bill Calfee. "It is a great honor to have 'The King' involved as Honorary Chairman. His participation will do a great deal to enhance the tournament's profile and its impact on the Charlotte community and the benefitting charities."

The Chiquita Classic will feature a field of 156 players competing over 72 holes of stroke play for a purse of $550,000. The Club at Longview is a 7,065-yard layout designed by legend Jack Nicklaus which opened for play in 2003 with a guided tour of the golf course by the architect himself. It is located in the Charlotte suburb of Weddington, about 15 miles from downtown. A pro-am will be played on Wednesday, Sept. 26th.

Feb 15, 1981: Daytona for 7th & final time

Stock Car Racing History

We, at Wrangler had very mixed emotions that day and knew why Dale Inman was so emotional. Unbeknownst to the media, he was getting ready to leave Petty Enterprises and join our Wrangler sponsored Osterlund team of Dale Earnhardt.

Strange Bedfellows? Hendrick to Sponsor KURT Busch

General

Daytona Beach News-Journal

February 13, 2012 10:04 PM

BUSCH SPONSOR:

Kurt Busch and his No. 51 Chevrolet have a sponsor for the Daytona 500. HendrickCars.com will sponsor Kurt Busch and two other NASCAR teams in select races during the 2012 season. The sponsorships will promote the new-look retail automotive website, which re-launched Feb. 1, and coincide with the HendrickCars.com "2012 Indy Dream Weekend" sweepstakes.

Busch lost his ride in the No. 22 Penske Racing Dodge after a garage-area tirade during the race at Homestead. Finch, who owns Phoenix Racing, immediately picked him up for a one-year contract. Hendrick will also sponsor Busch's Nationwide Series car at Daytona.

"We're proud to have HendrickCars.com as our primary sponsor for both races in Daytona," Finch said. "The Hendrick people know how well sponsorships like this work when they're done the right way."

Daytona to Build 4/10-mile Track Behind Lake Lloyd for Speedweeks Short Track Stars Races in 2013 (Irwindale East?)

General

Tommie,

Thank you for mentioning scheduling.

One of the big reasons (besides great racing) that my hometown Southside Speedway in Richmond was successful for many years with several different promoters was that it found a niche. It ran on FRIDAY night in a Saturday night world. So guess what?? The guys who ran at South Boston and Langley and Trico/Orange County and Bowman-Gray and the western Virginia Saturday night tracks converged in Richmond on Friday nights, before going to a half dozen different racing venues on Saturday nights.

Too many tracks have killed each other running against each other.

Back in the day, Sanford and Rockingham had a good Friday/Saturday deal as did Wake County and Wilson. Smart promoters.
