Ed Sanseverino's Billy Biscoe/Philip Walker Photo

General

I really enjoyed seeing the photo recently posted by Ed Sanseverino of our members Billy Biscoe and Philip Walker side-by-side at the old Trico Speedway.

Growing up in Richmond, not many of our guys ran the old dirt Trico layout, but ran South Boston's asphalt instead on Saturday night. After Trico was paved some of the Richmond guys would go down. The first paved Trico race was held on September 5, 1970.

My buddy Frank in Pennsylvania has a great series of color transparencies of Ray Hendrick getting airborne in the first turn, landing by a pond after the track was paved. I'd love to get him to post some of his stuff on RacersReunion one day.

I was curious to see when my racing hero Ray Hendrick made his first Trico appearance. Didn't take me long. The archived November 30, 1970 edition of The Danville Bee carries the story.

Ray showed up there for the first time for a big 150 lap show paying $1,200 to win on Sunday, November 29, 1970. Although Ray "only" qualified on the outside pole beside pole sitter Eddie Royster, it was Hendrick who led ALL 150 laps and took home the money. Al Glascock was the only car to finish on the lead lap with Ray. If there was a big payday on the east coast in modified or late model, Ray was usually there and more often than not took home the winner's purse.

I hope I can get Frank to post some photos some day. He's got 'em from everywhere starting around 1962.

That's what I did initially, but still doesn't let me do the ALT 0174. Now I get no message, just nothing happens when I try to type that. And, when I click my orange Mozilla Firefox symbol at top left, the only things I get in the drop down box are Restore, Move, Size, Minimize, Maximize and Close.... NO Options.

I think I better leave well enough alone. Thanks for trying to help.

Stupid me... every time I try to use the circle R copyright sign in a post on this site using the ALT command and 0174 I immediately get some kind of pop up blocker stopping me. Typical of my ignorance. But, I certainly get the using the copyrighted name correctly and refraining from using someone else's name.

Mixing Politics with Racing

The worst part of the old Southern 500 races was having to listen to all the political speeches, starting with Strom Thurmond, in pre-race.

Unfortunately for our household Tim, we are getting all of YOUR SC campaign commercials on our Charlotte tv stations beaming "south of the border." I have no favorite among any of the candidates and the ads are starting to grate on me.

From yardsticks to lasers

Stock Car Racing History

Ya know, Johnny, first time I ever heard the word "stagger" was at a Winston West race and everybody was using a device called (I believe) a Stagger Master. I just remember Bud and his boys shoving a front fender up and down really hard and "adjusting" the ride height! Of course, I was so ignorant, the first time I ever saw Earnhardt hit a wall (and I saw that a bunch!), I had no idea what they were doing with that ball of string the first time I saw it stretched from front wheel to back. I'm still pretty ignorant. Spring rubbers are pretty sophisticated and technical to me.
