Ex Footballer Bubba Smith Passed; "Stole" My Wife's Seat at Talladega

General

You may have seen in today's sports section or news that former pro football player turned actor, Bubba Smith passed away. Bubba was a big, big guy, listed at 6'-7" and 283 lbs in his college playing days. He earned some acting fame in the Police Academy movies, but we met him at Talladega (1982/1983?) when they were filming that awful Hal Needham/Burt Reynolds film, "Stroker Ace." Hal, of course, was listed as car owner for the Harry Gant #33 car sponsored by U.S. Tobacco's Skoal brand. U.S. Tobacco had no hospitality suite at Talladega (home of the Winston 500) but we had a beautiful freestanding Wrangler suite that we'd built past the start finish line, right across from the end of pit road before you got to turn 1, with an unexcelled view of the entire track. Johnny Hayes asked if Hal could use it to film scenes and to host some of the stars. We didn't think our guests would have any problem with Burt Reynolds and Loni Anderson being around our suite and we said ok. In the movie, all the hospitality suite scenes you see with Ned Beatty, Loni Anderson, etc. are from our Talladega Wrangler suite. The suite had a beautiful horseshoe shaped bar, where my wife wasseated during the actual race, along side John and Eddie Rhodes of the famous Rhodes Brothers Review of Daytona and Miami that used to play for all the Wrangler and Winston media parties. In fact, John's son became the media liason for Dale Earnhardt for many years and Eddie's son ran the CITGO racing program. Anyway, while my wife, Joyce was visiting the powder room, they brought Bubba Smith, who was playing a chauffeur in the movie, to our suite and he sat down in Joyce's seat at the bar. He was one huge man. When Joyce came back out, she found me to tell me someone had taken her seat. Well, John and Eddie Rhodes were rolling in the aisle, snickering. My personal assessment was that anybody that big couild have any seat they wanted. I told Joyce there was no way I was asking that man to move. We all laughed about it later, but my wife was serious about wanting her seat back at the time. For our assistance, we were later invited to the movie's world opening at Oven's Auditorium in Charlotteand put up at the Radisson Hotel and chauffeured to the auditorium in a Limo. Skoal had the Charlie Daniels band there playing and Burt, Loni, Ned, Jim Nabors and Bubba all attended. It was a fun evening and has been a standing joke in our family for over a quarter century anytime a seat is taken by another person. I am saddened for Bubba's family and acquaintances at his passing and feel like I have lost another link to a funny racing memory.

Nashville Superspeedway off the NASCAR schedule

Yes, Randy... Memphis was auctioned off by Dover Motorsports in December 2010 and PattyKaydon't also forget Gateway (E. St. Louis) was shut down by Dover. I am very saddened that the good racing folks of Nashville may yet be screwed again, but I can't blame it all on ISC and NASCAR. Quite frankly, for many years the original Dover track was an absolute dump that catered to the horse track with autos as a second thought red headed step child and we were treated just like that there. Most of us hated to have to go to Dover, other than to eat seafood. Heck, Mel Joseph was in the paving business and he couldn't keep asphalt on his own racetrack. Denis McGlynn may have been a great military guy, but IMHO has always left a lot to be desired as a racetrack operator. Personally, I think they got greedy. The slots and hotel saved the original Dover. I will say it was a pleasure working with two of the original Dover track's PR guys, Brian Buchauer and Al Robinson.

The Pettys' Pull Pushed Derrike Cope to Big Time

Judging from this much earlier NASCAR photo, Hershel and Richard were definitely not strangers at Seattle in 1984.

I don't think it was fluorescent.

Here's a UPI archived story covering the race:

After destroying one race car during practice, Jim Bown...

July 8, 1984

KENT, Wash. -- After destroying one race car during practice, Jim Bown of Portland, Ore., climbed into another Buick and won the inaugural 200 Winston West Grand National stock car race at Seattle International Raceway Sunday.

Bown, 24, captured his fifth career victory by finishing one second ahead of Bill Schmitt of Redding, Calif. He completed the 55 laps around the 2.25-mile road course in one hour, 36 minutes, 29 seconds at an average speed of 76.956 mph.

Bown had to rebuild his backup race car after crashing during Thursday's practice session. He rolled the car four times at more than 130 mph after cutting a tire, but escaped uninjured.

'It was pretty scary and gave me a lot of respect for the course,' Bown said of the crash. 'I took it as careful as I could today, and that helped me win the race.'

While seven other drivers finished on the lead lap, veteran stock car driver Richard Petty wasn't among them.

In fact, both Richard and his son, Kyle, failed to finish the race and ended up well down in the standings. The engine in Richard Petty's STP Pontiac blew on the 13th lap and he was credited with an 18th place finish.

Kyle Petty's 7-Eleven Ford Thunderbird dropped out on the 14th lap with a broken oil sump pump and he finished 17th.

The elder Petty, of Level Cross, N.C., claimed his record 200th career NASCAR Winston Cup victory July 4 in the Firecracker 400 at the Daytona, FLa, International Speedway.

Defending Winston West champion Jim Robinson of North Hollywood, Calif., finished third in an Oldsmobile, with rookies Ruben Gracia of El Monte, Calif., and Derrike Cope of Spanaway, Wash., fourth and fifth, respectively.

Ron Esau of Lakeside, Calif., was sixth, Harry Goularte of Morgan Hill, Calif., seventh and John Krebs of Rocklin, Calif., eighth.

Pole sitter Hershel McGriff of Bridal Veil, Ore., was among the early leaders, but went out onthe 46th lap with a broken throttle cable and finished 11th.

Thanks to RR members Ron Willard and TMC Chase, here's another 1984 photo from Kent Washington showing Richard Petty and Derrike Cope in the same frame:

Just looked through all the photos... That's a really good one of Richard and Derrike together on Page 3, Picture #44... look at the amazing height difference between the "King" and Derrike.

Actually found myself in one photo... Page 5, Picture #63, standing very lazily in the background on a Derrike Cope #95 pitstop, wearing a navy shirt, red 7-Eleven "Gotohell" style sporty cap and sipping on a Big Gulp. Not offering much help to Jefferson Racing except for a little hard cash, lol.

Yes, that is Derrike in the #95 and I see one of my 7-Eleven banners on the fence. George Jefferson ran that number for years. Chad Little drove for George after Derrike.
