NASCAR Track Length Measurements Incorrect

General

Speaking of that Darlington Armco, here's a 1958 Tom Kirkland photo of Eddie Pagan testing it.

NASCAR Track Length Measurements Incorrect

General

Nah, Patty... it really was a curiosity question. Some years back (well a few more than some) NASCAR made a huge deal out of remeasuring all of the tracks, which resulted in changes in the measurements of some tracks, aka Martinsville for one. Heck, they had so many different distances for the same track at Richmond I don't remember them all - 1969 track remeasured from .625-mile to .5625-mile; remeasured from .5625-mile to .5-mile; remeasured again from .5-mile to .542-mile prior to the first race of 1970. This was the same darned track, before the expansion to 3/4-mile! I will, however, refrain from asking how they measure the length of road courses, lol. You are right, those azaleas at Martinsville were quite a loss and the day they put concrete in the turns at Darlington all but eliminated the old Darlington stripe from the Armco.

NASCAR Track Length Measurements Incorrect

General

For many years NASCAR measured the length of each track by establishing and measuring an imaginary line 15 feet inside the track outer wall. I don't recollect NASCAR changing the "official" length of any racetrack since the installation of SAFER barriers. Unless NASCAR at the same time changed its measuring formula, all tracks that had SAFER barriers added are now shorter than they used to be and the speeds are incorrect.

Editorial Cartoonists Weigh In

Bobby, I hadn't thought of Rob Moroso in a long time, until you mentioned him. Around '87-'88 I was ghost writing all of the Oldsmobile NASCAR press materials, as well as handling projects for Crown Petroleum. Robby was a really young, rebellious kid who had no mother in his life and resented dad, Dick's authority. He was very talented, but so antsy and never wanting to be still for one minute. It was difficult to get him to spend an hour or two trying to get in-depth information for story material. Let's hope the ending with kyle continues to turn out differently. Both are (were) tremendously talented drivers. I think of Dale Earnhardt going to Bud Moore's team in 1982. Trust me, Kyle could use a good dose of Bud Moore.

Maybe Childress should consider replacing Harvick with that officer who caught Kyle!

Bruton Smith Set Up the Kyle Busch Speeding Deal to Sell Tickets

General

I am envious of you, Tim. I have 2 grandsons, 10 & 6, neither of whom hasbeen to aCup track.. I have taken the 10 year old to the Concord, NC asphalt track and the Lancaster, SC dirt track, but he wants to see what he calls a "Real" race. I may try to take him to Richmond in September. I hope you and the boys have a wonderful time... I know you will just being with them. I never thought you could love anyone as much as your own children, until I had grandchildren. Being a grandparent is a special privilege.

Dave, I posted that same observation about 7:00 a.m. this morning as it occurred to me as well. Race fans, these days, are apparently easy to fool and easily deprived of their money. Thanks for my son-in-law receiving four tickets to the 600, I will be taking my three grandson to their very first race. I am excited, very excited, but it is because I get to spend some time with those three and show them what Pop has been talking about all these years. The problem is, they won't see racing as I know it, and even with the free tickets I expect to be pay for other things like parking, and food and all. But it will be ok. It's a one time deal. It's me and my three biggest fans getting some time together and I can't wait. Hope someone asks the seven year old what the racers call his Pop. Someone did that last year at Columbia Speedway and Micheal beamed when he said "The Legend". Any grand dad has to love that.

So, look for us in turn four. We'll be there. What my grandsons will see is a Hollywood production of commercialism at its best. I need for them to hear the loud boos surely to be delivered to young Busch and then I can explain the the reasons you don't speed. Andrew will be getting his learners permit in three months.

Bruton Smith Set Up the Kyle Busch Speeding Deal to Sell Tickets

General

After reading this morning's Charlotte paper where Bruton Smithcalled a local sportswriter and blasted him for opining that Kyle Busch should be punished immediately for his speeding episode, it suddenly occurred to me that we've probably all been duped. What is wrong with us? We can't see the forest for the trees and we've all played right into Bruton's hand. It's Charlotte race week by gosh and Bruton needed his typical pre-World 600 controversy to hype the race weekend and sell tickets. Hey, this is just like Willy T. Ribbs getting arrested for reckless driving in Charlotte after Bruton and Humpy had set him up in a "competitive" car for their race. It was front page news and had people talking about CMS. I've been around this deal a long time and can't believe it took me a day or two to figure this is all a Bruton ticket selling ploy. You can be sure plenty of money has changed hands. I should have known better than to fall for Bruton's ticket seling trick.

Kyle Busch gets speeding ticket: 128 in a 45 mph zone
By Meghan Cooke - macooke@charlotteobserver.com
Tuesday, May. 24, 2011

Days before he's set to race in the Coca-Cola 600, NASCAR driver Kyle Busch was cited for speeding and careless and reckless driving.

An Iredell County Sheriff's deputy stopped Busch on Tuesday after he clocked him driving 128 mph in a 45-mph zone on Perth Road between Troutman and Mooresville, according to the Sheriff's Office.

Busch, of Mooresville, was driving a yellow Lexus sports car.
