Question of the day for March 20, 2011. Subjective.

General

Of course, Big Bill did race in the 60s... at the first Talladega race in 1969 when the PDA boycotted over the tire issue and Bill climbed in a GT car to pad the field.

Not trying to give a short answer here............but Bill France, Sr. certainly comes to mind & the reasons are pretty well documented. However, I suspect you were talking about a driver who continued to be active throughout the '50s.

Question of the Day for March 18, 2011

General

In April 1982 - at Darlington, SC - Dale Earnhardt requested I change out of the bright green "golf slacks" I was wearing before the race started. I did and he went on to score his first win for Bud Moore. I never showed up again in green. My old friend the late track promoter and car owner, Paul Sawyer said he used to ask his partner, Joe Weatherly why he was so superstitious of the color green when he had no problem stuffing his pockets with the green loot when he won a race!

A lot of interesting info on this track, as well as others in the area, is found in "The Piedmond-Triad's Role in Early NASCAR History:1940-1958, a 2004 Senior Thesis at UNC Asheville by William Tate.

Great info... track was dirt, not asphalt according to stories and posters. Noted Tadlock fatality. That is one of the great family racing names in eastern VA / NC.

Rockingham "Race Train" - Washington, DC to the Track

Thank you, Chase for finding the Jack Walker scan in the Russ Thompson post that I couldn't.

My buddy Frank is the first person visible immediately to the right of the flag stand gate. I am right in front of him with my Kodak 8mm movie camera up to my face.

Bobby, I just found a newspaper clip of Seaboard running a race train from Norfolk & Richmond to the 1965 Atlanta 500. They could have sure used those Virginia fans in Atlanta this year.

Friday the 13th, 2015 will be the 49th anniversary of my buddy, Frank & I in the pre-dawn hours boarding the infamous Rockingham Race Train at Richmond, Virginia in 1966 for our first trip to the "Super Scenic Superspeedway Where the Fan is Always First."

The adventure to the first, last and only Peach Blossom 500 still stands in my mind as one of my fondest. Seems like it was just yesterday. This is how race trips ought to be - memorable.
