REMEMBER?
Stock Car Racing History
We even drove up to Beltsville, MD from Richmond on WEDNESDAY nights!
Cody, there is a movie called "The Last American Hero" based on Junior Johnson and starring Jeff Bridges that always got great reviews. I've yet to see it myself, but will watch it as soon as I find a copy.
We used to really enjoy watching Mac Mangum race at Wilson County Speedway in the early 70s in his #1 Chevelle. That car always had tons of horsepower. Mac was the favorite driver of our driver, Danny Lee's little girl. When Earl Arnold would show up at Wilson, both he and Mac would be running cars with #1 on them. Here's a later photo of Mac at Wilson, taken in 1976 and posted by our member Tim Hamm of Wilson on his page:
Wow they should have contacted me. I have access to a track that still has stands built in the 1950's, Scott came to race a time or two at, and like most tracks of the day no walls or guard rail in the turns and backstretch. We could have been made it to be dusty or muddy-whatever they wanted. My God, it was used in the Alcola Aluminum TV special Hard Chargers in the '60s. And the flag stand is even authenitic for the period. It's rickety, sways when the cars pass, and you need the climbing skills of a Sherpa to get up there.
From today's Fort Mill, SC Herald:
To be filmed at Chester, SC track

Got to share Nashville's Victory lane with Dale Earnhardt when he beat DW driving the #15 Bud Moore Wrangler Ford. It was a good place to race and the kids loved the little amusement park. Ditto your Richmond comments. Grew up there, later sponsored the Wrangler 400 there and eventually became Media Relations Director for 10 years. Richmond promoter, Paul Sawyer was one of a kind. A great race promoter and a true friend.Money talks and Bruton walks.
A big part of what Nascar is missing are these knid of tracks. It is almost impossible to have a bad show !
The Boys at the Beach are so blind about the core product that people are turning away.
The shot callers at Richmond are very smart and saw it coming by building a new facility which is awsome but I must say that the Old Richmond Fairgrounds was a killer track that showcased hard nosed racing.
