Very good report! $10,000 was quite a purse for a short track race in 1961. Zervakis got $2,250 for the win, too bad it was the only Yankee 500.

Looks like the winner was driving a Chevrolet hovercraft.
I can remember seeing Wayne's #38 Chevrolet setting at what had to be a 1 car garage next to a country store in Farmington, NC (on the other side of I-40 from Advance). And from there, he raced at the top level. Later on, Wayne's Davie Truckers softball team was the North Carolina Class A State Champions.
From an advertised 36 wrecks in 1969 to 1 caution in 1970 is quite an improvement. Some of those guys must have learned how to drive in a year's time.
Maybe Ed had already lost 20 laps due to engine trouble, then blew his engine and crashed on his 34th lap, the leader's 54th lap.
So racing is over for the year at AMS (the speedway formerly known as AIR). And according to the AP story in my morning newspaper (yes, I still get it) "the stands were not even half full." And I don't know how many seats have been removed, but I thought there used to be stands on the back stretch, too. How much longer before AMS-AIR joins the list of tracks that North Carolina Motor Speedway and North Wilkesboro reside on?
Looks like the trophy shrunk, too. Think it was the salt air? But even with an opening of a '59 Ford blasting through the measured mile at '58 Speed Weeks it's still a great video, thanks a lot!
Victory lane sure did look like Curtis hoisting the trophy at the '56 Southern 500, hardtop and all. But maybe the HM crew just put that zipper top back on really, really fast!
Looks like Lee had to catch a little air in order to knock Joe out of the way. The fans standing a few feet off of A1A while these guys come by double file at 140+ remain among the bravest in history. Found this to be much more entertaining than the few minutes of same speed 'racing' I saw yesterday, thanks for the great report.
Sounds like CMS needed BOA's "Jim Dandy to the Rescue."
