It's still at the Dixie Classic Fairgrounds, too.
Painted on the backstretch fence at Hickory for many years, '6 Ford Go Roy'. And Roy did go, very fast.
Greg Fielden's book "40 Years of Stock Car Racing Volume 3" says on page 169 that the frequent caution flags caused 2 pace cars, both Chevrolet Camaro's, to overheat, and a 3rd pace car had to be brought in. It makes no mention of what kind of car the 3rd car was, and also does not contain any pictures of any of the 3.
Nice reference to Bob (Junior) Johnson in the story. The stories, pics and articles from both Riverside and Daytona have all been great, I have really enjoyed them. Also enjoyed the Aquasco site, and the pics of Malcolm Durham's "Strip Blazers".
I can remember seeing STP stickers everywhere, before we even knew what STP was and the Petty deal was made. The 1972 Winston Western 500 also turned out to be the last race completed by my favorite driver, Friday Hassler in the #39 Rock City Chevrolet. He had a good 9th place finish, and things were looking pretty good heading to Daytona.
Nice, thanks Dave, I knew you'd come through!
The Clarence's Steakhouse #26 modified coach, driven by Paul Radford, was one of the best looking modified race cars, ever.
Great picture of Goldsmith in Smokey's '57, with the exhausts coming out of the rear bumper.
Smokey had the number 3, and it next went to Ray Fox. Between those 2 great mechanic- car owners an awful lot of great drivers drove the number 3.
