Prob. not, the surf and shallow water would have meant you would be at least 500-600 feet away and the view from the sand dunes on the beach would be up close and personal. some times to close and personal from the many spin outs. there's a video of the 1957 race at silodrome.com/1957-daytona-beach-race that shows the race and at the start 4 F-100 Thunderbird jets come down the beach at low level and as the camera pans the entire course you can see there are no boats watching. of course other earlier years may have had some boats but the many photo's I've seen I don't remember any.
poor Tim, you think you know your friends but they keep pounding on ya....lol....good one guys...
will keep Mike in our thoughts and prayers and we send our best wishes to his family and friends.
there's a nice article in the Syracuse paper today listing Jon's many racing endeavor's and his life long passion for all types of racing including his running an NHRA AA/dragster as well has his sprint and midget cars.
Just got a note from Steve Miller that a friend of ours, Jon Button of Chittenango, N. Y. passed on Jan.26th,2015. Jon was a builder and roofing contractor and Vol. Fireman in the Chittenango area all his life. He was a heck of a race car driver and a good friend. I send my deepest condolences to Margaret and their 4 children and grand children.
when it happened in early December the family asked that the news be kept quiet and to respect the family's privacy. so glad to hear he is doing better and will keep him in my thoughts and prayers.
