May 16, 1958 - Lee Rules The Ragtops At Charlotte

Stock Car Racing History

That Lee Petty was one ornery son-of-a-gun. It seems he's got a bone to pick with someone in almost every race. I'm beginning to wonder if he's really Richard's daddy. I can believe that Kyle's related, but Richard is always smiling.

I dunno. No Chevrolet ever had a grille like that. Definitely a '48 Ford.

Sure does seem like they had better camera angles back in the Seventies. You can actually see more than two cars at the same time. I wonder why they don't still do that? Oh that's right, you can't read the sponsors decals. Wouldn't want to miss out on any of that payola surrounding free product placement.

DID YALL FORGET ABOUT ADAM PETTY TODAY?

Stock Car Racing History

I was always a Petty fan, so I was deeply saddened when I heard that he had been killed. It wasn't so much that I was hoping he would be a champion but that Richard and Kyle were too nice to have something like this happen. Kyle had disappointed me by not living up to the Petty legacy but Adam seemed more focused on the racing. Kyle has since redeemed himself in my eyes by speaking truthfully about the problems in NASCAR and by not relying on his father's legacy to get along.Unlike Tim, I don't blame NASCAR. Indycar and Formula One were already using the HANS device in 2000 (it was mandated in both series). It had been presented to all the NASCAR drivers and they didn't want it. People have to take personal responsibility for what happens to them instead of depending on someone to do it for them. I'm ultimately in favor of the government or sanctioning body looking out for the welfare of people, but if you have options you should take the initiative.Having been an amateur racer, I know that safety equipment is expensive and it's hard to choose between spending $300 on your safety or on the car. That's not a problem for multi-million dollar race teams. Fortunately, they seem to have gotten the message. All of the teams have good seats, good helmets and lots of extra equipment to keep them safe. At this point, all I could ask for is a dedicated medical team like Indycar has. Someone who knows all of the drivers personally is is accustomed to dealing with the commin injuries in auto racing.

SHIFT FROM DRUNKS TO TERRORISTS

General

I think we would save more lives if that money was spent on doctors, but they don't look as impressive on TV.

Re-purposed Kyle Petty show car - maybe a third life?

Stock Car Racing History

I'm not sure that you could build a functioning 1983 race car on a stock frame or get it through inspection. But Cale was a star and Bill France wouldn't let one of his big attractions miss a race. Rules can be bent if NASCAR's pocketbook is involved. There may not be such a thing as "The Call", but I think that not all of the restrictor plates that NASCAR hands out are equal.

For what it's worth. Brian France Divorce Documents made public

Current NASCAR

If he has no stock in the corporation. He know he doesn't go to races. He's worth $564 million with more in the pipeline. That explains a lot. I can't believe that he's invested in ISC instead, that's an even shakier proposition than the sanctioning body.

Racing History Minute - April 30, 1961

Stock Car Racing History

Having compared the photo to your racing reference link, I'll concede that everything matches up. Either Fieden made a mistake in saying Baker qualified 5th, or Tim made a mistake in transcribing the event. Everyone agrees that Baker finished in that position.

I see your point about the dash and seats in the Bill France photo, but there definitely appear to be window braces on that car. I also think that I see the c-pillar sticking out beyond the windshield header. It's possible that the team bolted the top back on after qualifying and the sun was in the right position to light up the interior in that way. So it's a mystery and I'm content to let it remain so.

I don't understand what your point was.

Your results match the pace lap photo for positions 1,2 and 5 (and maybe 7th and 9th), but the wrong car in position 3 (and probably 4). Tim's story has the correct cars in position 1 and 2 but the wrong car starting 5th.

Either the Getty photo is an early lap but not the pace lap, or it's not from either of the Spring Martinsville races.
