tunis speedway, iowa

tunis speedway started as a horse racing 1/2 mile track..my brothers drove there in early 50s, one even got married at the track, he drove car 127, a 38 ford coupe.. the other brother drove a hudson.. in 57 my 3rd brother and i both raced there, he had 38 ford tudor, i had a 39. i raced there again starting in 1964, i raced a 1956 pontiac tudor. in its history a flagman was killed, a driver was killed and just before it closed a spectator was killed after the races being hit by a car in the parking lot.. i seen red droste mentioned in in an article here, i knew red and he had raced a 37 ford in his early years, after an altercation during a race some one took an ax to his car.. red drove it the rest of the season and it was dubbed the old goat (which red soon painted it on his car)..tunis was a hard track to run on as when it was made they used the trees the cut as fill in the corners. the trees rotted and became soft and mushy, the pot holes would shift from lap to lap, a lot of memories of tunis.

I'm one of the few on RR who have been paid directly in cash by Big Bill.

In the early days he paid in cash after the race.
