This is the blue car that Richard ran at the winter Richmond race. Evidently there was an issue concerning STP's sponsorship dollors. They showed at Riverside for the first race with no STP decal on the hood but having the hood/roof stripes and the side painted dayglow ....came to Daytona with no decal on the hood or top surface stripes and then this car with blue side. How ironic that STP came into NASCAR with the largest sponsoship package ever in "72" only to penny pinch 7 years later then becoming the longest running sponsor in NASCAR at the time they left the sport.

Short answer for me: Andy Granatelli - out. Beatrice conglomerate - in. Also, Richard drives by as rookie Dale Earnhardt parks himself in the fence.

CHASE, DID YOU TAKE YOUR PHOTO OF #43 PASSING #2 FROM THE 1ST/2ND TURNS GRANDSTAND LOCATION? YOUR PHOTO HAS THE WOODED TREES AREA IN BACK STRAIGHTAWAY PHOTO SHOT? WHERE ARE THE STANDING RACE FANS THAT WAS IN THE ANDY TOWLER'S PHOTO?
1979 RICHMOND FAIRGROUNDS RACEWAY HAD THE GRANDSTANDS LOCATED FRONT STRAIGHTAWAY, 1ST/2ND TURNS,AND 3RD/4TH TURNS. NO BACK STRAIGHTAWAY GRANDSTANDS. THE WOODED TREES AREA IN BACK STRAIGHTAWAY HAS BEEN KNOWN TO HAVE ABOUT 3OO TREE CLIMBING RACE FANS WATCHING THE RACE.
I THINK ANDY TOWLER'S PHOTO WAS TAKEN FROM THE INFIELD LOCATION TOWARDS THE 1ST/2ND TURNS GRANDSTAND OR THE 3RD/4TH TURNS GRANDSTAND. I THINK THAT #2 DALE EARNHARDT MAY HAVE SPUN OUT AT LEAST TWICE IN FRONT OF #43 RICHARD PETTY DURING THE RACE.
Thanks for any information or photos posted. Dennis Garrett Richmond,Va.USA

Dennis - Check out Tim Leeming's Racing Minute and Donald Evans' picture of Earnhardt's spin here: http://stockcar.racersreunion.com/forum/topics/racing-history-minute-march-11-1979 All accounts I've read said Earnhardt spun on the first lap - but then soldiered on. He finished 13th when the day was done. The race only had 2 cautions - one for Earnhardt's spin and the other for a Baxter Price spin. I didn't take the photo in my reply from a few years ago. I don't have it tagged as to where I got it - but I've had it for many years. Judging my the skidmarks in Donald's picture, Earnhardt slid a good distance. He may have slid from being near the fans to the gap between the end of the stands and the white, outer billboard - at least from a camera lens perspective.

CHASE, I THINK YOU'RE RIGHT ABOUT BOTH PHOTOS BEING TAKEN AT SAME TIME. PHOTOS TAKEN FROM TELEPHOTO CAMERA LENS SOMETIMES SHOWS PHOTOS DIFFERENTLY. THANKS, FOR CLEARING MY MIND AFTER SEEING YOUR TIM'S COMMENTS March 11, 2014 at 10:12am PHOTO OF #2 DALE EARNHARDT SPINOUT IN TURN 2 AND BACK STRAIGHTAWAY PHOTO. I WAS MISSING THE (2) TREE CLIMBING RACE FANS ABOVE THE WHITE PAINTED WOODEN BOARDED FENCE WITH "WINSTON" PAINTED IN RED, THAT WASN'T IN YOUR ANDY TOWLER'S PHOTO COMMENT. ANDY TOWLER'S PHOTO IS AN INFIELD PHOTO OF TURN 2 GRANDSTAND/SPINOUT OF #2 DALE EARHARDT AND #43 RICHARD PETTY PASSING HIM.
YOUR ANDY TOWLER COMMENT PHOTO WAS TAKEN AT THE SAME TIME AS THE ANDY TOWLER'S.
YOUR PHOTO IS CAPTURING THE WOODED AREA BETWEEN TURN 2 GRANDSTAND AND THE WHITE PAINTED WOODEN BOARDED FENCE WITH "WINSTON" PAINTED IN RED.
