Thanks for the article, Chase, explaining "Rapid Ray's" preference for adding the "s" to his last name. Had never heard that. By the way, not only did Ray go on to win that very first Martinsville Late Model Sportsman race, he also won the companion Modified event (called by darkness), becoming the first driver to ever win two Martinsville races (for two different car owners) in the same day enroute to his record 20 Martinsville wins. Below is Associated Press coverage from the Fredericksburg Free Lance Star . Would be interesting to see the actual race day coverage story from the Danville Bee if you can access it. P
