People read the sports pages for a lot of different reasons.

Most are gym rats, former gym rats or wannabe gym rats who played sports in their younger days, still play sports and will always have an interest in sports.

They can't help themselves. It's in their blood.

Some never played sports -- my father was one of these -- but they've fallen in love with one or two sports to the point of being rabid about certain teams, certain players, standings, statistics and all the rest. They wear team hats, team shirts and team underwear if they can find them.

Then there's Darwin Doll, and people like him. He reads the sports pages, too, but he mostly focuses on his passion -- auto racing, specifically drag racing.

Doll's a motor-head. He eats, dreams, studies, reads, collects and consumes anything having to do with drag racing.
