This past week, Jason Del Ray wrote an article for adage.com. I am not familiar with the writer or the site, but it was graciously posted on Racers Reunion by PattyKay Lilley. The article by Mr. Del Ray appears to be partly an interview with NASCAR’s new CMO, Steve Phelps, and partly commentary by the writer. It is an almost futile project to expound upon the article moreso than PattyKay already did, but I would like to make a stab at it nevertheless. I would do so by means of a letter to Mr. Phelps, as follows:
Mr. Steve Phelps, CMO
NASCAR Headquarters
Daytona Beach, Fl.
Dear Mr. Phelps:
Although this letter is written from the mind and fingers of one person, it is intended to express the heartbeat of hundreds of fans your organization has disowned, and, in so doing, has caused the current problems of declining tv ratings and ticket sales to races. If this group of collective fans may be so bold, please allow us to address your concerns.
