LEGENDTORIAL ~  From Memories to Cows and Chickens

by: Tim Leeming

I extracted myself from The Lair this past Friday to travel to Spartanburg to attend the event on which Perry Allen Wood had worked so hard.  It was to be a recognition party for the great contributions the City of Spartanburg and Spartanburg County, South Carolina in general, have made to the sport of stock car racing, even long before the formation of NASCAR.  Bud Moore, David Pearson, Cotton Owens, Jack Smith, Rex White, Dick Brooks, G. C. Spenser and so many more were either born and raised there or spent a great deal of their racing life in the area.  Spartanburg was the first consideration for the location of a new superspeedway to be constructed in 1969 but that track ended up in a little town in Alabama and is now known as Talladega Super Speedway.  Too bad Spartanburg missed that.  Perry Wood did an awesome job bringing the event together and although I was not able to go back Saturday for the BIG event, I find it hard to believe Saturday could have topped the atmosphere in the Chapman Center, also known as The Spartanburg County Historic Museum.
